LAUNCHING THIS MONTH: A NEW DIGITAL EXHIBITION
EXPLORING THE SS UNITED STATES AND ADVERTISING
Special Members-Only Events, Exclusive Merchandise And More To Come
America's Flagship made her maiden voyage in 1952, at the dawn of what has since become known as the Ad Age. For the next two decades, as the ship sped back and forth between Europe and New York, advertisers developed complex, psychological techniques to capture a person’s attention — and change the very way they experience the world.

Set to launch on April 19, Advertising the United States: Discovering America’s Flagship through Prints, Posters, and Advertisements will offer visitors to this first-of-its-kind digital exhibition a look at the intricate, exciting, and oftentimes beautiful visualizations of the SS United States in advertising. The digital exhibition will also explore how these advertisements affect our understanding, experience, and memory of the United States

During the digital exhibition, which will run through August 15, 2021, we will be offering new exhibition-specific items through our online shop and additional advertising content on our social media accounts. Special members-only events, for those who have donated to the Conservancy and are active members, are also being planned, including a panel discussion that will be held on Sunday, May 2.

CONSERVANCY CHAPTERS HELPING TO REACH NEW AUDIENCES, ENAGE SUPPORTERS
Preparing for 2021 Virtual Gala
The Conservancy is deeply grateful for its robust network of regional chapters located across the country and around the world. Recently, we held our first ever global chapter chair meeting via Zoom to discuss upcoming initiatives and the ways in which the chapters can support the Conservancy's efforts on behalf of the SS United States. Sixteen attendees representing chapters in New Jersey, New York, the Southeast, Atlanta, Hampton Roads, the West Coast, and Europe convened for an update from Conservancy President Susan Gibbs and an energetic discussion about future plans and events.

As part of the larger discussion, West Coast Chapter Co-chair Mark Perry and others have begun exploring how each chapter can participate in this year’s virtual gala, which is being planned to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the ship’s christening and launch. Based off the wildly successful event hosted by the West Coast Chapter to commemorate the 68th anniversary of the vessel’s record-shattering maiden voyage, this year's virtual gala will look to engage a greater number of supporters and become an even bigger success. (Don't worry, if you missed last year's SS United States Gala 68 Variety Show, - which featured such notable guests as country music legend Dolly Parton, Mercedes Ellington, and cabaret sensation Klea Blackhurst - you can still watch it on YouTube by clicking the link HERE.)

Stay tuned for more details about the 2021 Conservancy Virtual Gala and if you're not already involved with a Conservancy Chapter in your area, please reach out and climb aboard!

MORE FROM THE SS UNITED STATES CONSERVANCY
The Conservancy and the Pollin Group continue to plan for the return of our "Saving Our Maritime History" cruise, which is scheduled for August 21-28, 2022. Traveling aboard the Norwegian Breakaway to New England and Canada's maritime provinces, this seven night cruise will include exciting programming aboard the ship and unique shoreside activities. Every booking also results in a generous donation to the Conservancy.

If you didn't see it, or should we say hear it, the SS United States Conservancy - Hampton Roads Chapter recently shared a video of the refurbished Leslie Tyfon 575 steam horn from the forward stack of the SS United States being tested by its current owner. The collector has restored it to like-new working condition. It's even hooked to four 80-gallon compressed air tanks.

THE BIG U CONTINUES TO INSPIRE...

"The SS United States is a true American champion, and I’m proud to support the Conservancy’s efforts on this historic and patriotic project."

- Jim Nantz, CBS Sports Broadcaster
