Kelsey Kuykendall &
Chris Fleming
Kelsey and Chris are both graduates of the University of Southern Mississippi with their Masters in Coastal Science. Working as marine biologists allowed the pair to have intimate knowledge of the challenges our oceans are facing. One of the most rewarding experiences for both was being able to engage in meaningful conversations with the people that depended on the ocean’s resources in both professional and recreational capacities. Kelsey got to interact with a range of people from seafood industry leaders like Bumblebee Foods to local oyster fishermen and federal agencies. And through his work with NOAA headboat surveys, Chris had the opportunity to meet multigenerational boat captains and excited sports fishermen. Their research experiences as marine biologists had one common thread, when people were educated about the marine environment, they were more likely to take actions to protect it.

Thalassas, which means “of the sea” in Greek, was created in April of 2020. Kelsey and Chris started building their brand with the idea in mind that if they provide products and content that are fun and exciting, they could foster a sense of stewardship that builds a connection to the environment and inspires people to act and work toward preserving and caring for our oceans.
Kelsey says, "Our goal is to lead by example through organizing and supporting beach cleanups with our Sea Fans Clean-Up Crew program and donating a portion of our profits to marine conservation and research making Thalassas much more than an online store."
Future plans include launching a YouTube channel with a “Science Ride Along” series where they hope to highlight the amazing multi-disciplinary marine research being conducted by scientists and graduate students throughout the US. Thalassas is also a sponsor for this year’s Mississippi Coastal Cleanup.
Kelsey shared, "We have so many great memories of our time at GCRL. We loved taking trips on the now retired Hermes and going in the field with Dr. Heard. Some of our favorite memories of our time at GCRL include hanging out on East Beach and crabbing off the bridge, participating in the Coastal Cleanup, and making memories with our fellow graduate students on Government Street. We even look back fondly now on late nights spent with study groups preparing for Dr. Leaf’s biometry tests."
Below are a few examples of the products found on the website. Please take time to visit the Thalassas Facebook page and website to check out the wonderful products being offered as well as to stay abreast of what new exciting developments are to come from this unique new company.

Upcoming Virtual GCRL Science Cafe
The Great Red Snapper Count
Tuesday, August 31 - 6:00 - 7:00 pm via Zoom
|
|
Our Presenter:
J. Marcus Drymon, Assistant Extension Professor/Mississippi State University
Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium
|
|
In response to political, public, and management desires for more robust data on Red Snapper populations, a gulf wide initiative commonly referred to as the “Great Red Snapper Count” was funded to estimate the absolute abundance of Red Snapper in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Using a combination of visual surveys, bioacoustics, depletion estimators, and high reward tagging, the Gulf of Mexico was estimated to contain more than 100 million red snappers. For this GCRL Virtual Science Café, Dr. Drymon presents an overview of the science behind the Great Red Snapper Count and the engagement strategy used to share that science with stakeholders.
