A NOTE FROM BRYANT

Almost 30 years ago, a friend invited me to come to Epworth by the Sea on St. Simon’s Island. He said they were having a youth retreat with churches from all over Georgia and he thought I might have a good time. I reluctantly said “yes”…after all, I wouldn’t know a single soul there besides him. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I would ever make, and after 30 years, it remains one of my favorite weekends of the year!

I am so excited to take our youth back to Epworth for Regional Youth Assembly at the end of February. It is amazing to see the ways in which the spirit moves and our youth connect with each other and with God. We have over 25 kids going this year! 10 of those youth are on YAC (Youth Activity Council) and have helped to plan the event for the entire group.

We would appreciate your prayers as we prepare to head back for another year, but we could also use your help! This Sunday during the service, we will bless our youth with prayers as they get ready to depart for another wonderful trip. After the service, the youth will gather outside the sanctuary with buckets to collect money to help raise funds for our vans. Stop by after the service and ask them about the upcoming trip and help support this awesome group of youth!

See you in church! Bryant

CURRENT SERMON SERIES

Follow

A Sermon Series for the

Season of Epiphany

Follow -- easier said than done. Play the game, “Simon Says,” and you discover even obeying commands can be difficult. We have the best intentions. We want to be faithful. We hope, when called upon, we will, as the disciples did, “drop everything and follow him.” Unfortunately, life gets in the way. The world gets in the way. We get in the way. The result is wandering, more than following. Thus, we are beginning the near year with a series which reflects on those practices that ground us in our faith. Prayer, worship, and service help us keep focused on God and remind us that following Jesus means doing all things in love.

Lent

Living Dead, Dying for New Life

There are plenty of us “living dead” these days. Just because you have a beating heart, doesn’t mean you are fully alive. Nor does being dead mean that you do not continue to live. Jesus isn’t the kind of physician who deals in worrying about one’s vitals. No, he’s less concerned with survival and more concerned with new life. There is a difference. Throughout Lent, we will explore the stories of those who, through an encounter with Jesus, are transformed from the living dead into those who find new life. Perhaps this Lenten season, their stories might inform our own.

BAPTISM AND BELONGING CLASS

Lent is typically a time of preparation for baptism. In the Disciples tradition, we usually baptize children during the time of 3rd-6th grade. If your child is interested in exploring an Easter Baptism, we hope you'll consider joining us for our Baptism and Belonging class led by Rev. Nathan. Dates for our class will become available as we find a time that works best for the children involved.

This is really just a chance for your child to learn more about baptism. By coming to the class, by no means does that mean your child has to be baptized this year. We really want your child to feel comfortable and understand what it means before making such an important decision. Parents are also welcome to join us for the class. After the class, we can talk more about whether you all are ready for baptism on Easter Sunday. You can email Bryant at youth@sandyspringscc.org for more information or to secure a spot for your child.

Also, in the Disciples of Christ Church, if you haven't been baptized, you are always welcome. If you have questions about baptism. Please contact Rev. Nathan at nathan@sandyspringscc.org or call the church office.
