"The Road Less Traveled" by Veronica Furst

Meet & Greet

Thursday, January 5th

6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Sponsored by Friends of Jacob Edwards Library.

The Jacob Edwards Library invites you to an exhibit of pastel painter Veronica Furst. Veronica comes from a large family of artists and musicians in New Jersey, her birthplace. She began her artistic career studying oil painting at the age of 16. Throughout her life, she continued to paint in watercolor, oil, and most recently, pastel. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her paintings and has been awarded signature status in the Pastel Society of New Jersey.

From the artist:

"I am inspired by the majesty of nature and the light that reveals the color on dappled waters, glowing skies, and distant fields. Painting the landscape evokes an inner peace for me and appreciation of the simple things in life that reveal the beauty of God’s creation."

Afternoon Author Talks

Locust Lane by Stephen Amidon

Wednesday, January 25th

2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Sponsored by Friends of Jacob Edwards Library.

JEL is pleased to present a new series of author talks!

In January, Stephen Amidon will discuss his novel, Locust Lane.

On the surface, Emerson, Massachusetts, is just like any other affluent New England suburb. But when a young woman is found dead in the nicest part of town, the powerful neighbors close ranks to keep their families safe. In this searing novel, Eden Perry’s death kicks off an investigation into the three teenagers who were partying with her that night, each a suspect. Hannah is a sweet girl with an unstable history. Jack is the popular kid with a mean streak. Christopher is an outsider desperate to fit in. Their parents, each with motivations of their own, only complicate the picture: they will do anything to protect their children, even at the other’s expense.

Amidon was born in Chicago and grew up on the East Coast of America. He lived in London for twelve years before returning to the United States in 1999. He now lives in Massachusetts and Torino, Italy. His books have been published in sixteen countries and include two works of non-fiction, a collection of short stories, and eight novels, including Human Capital and Security. Amidon's novels have appeared on many books of the year lists, and Human Capital was selected by Jonathan Yardley, the chief critic of The Washington Post as one of the five best novels of 2004.

Poet Bill Tremblay

Thursday, January 26th

6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Lisbon, Portugal, a National Endowment for the Humanities at New York University, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Colorado Arts Award (for Shooting Script) as well as grants from the Corporation at Yaddo and the Mountain Writers Center. Stern Distinguished Professor Award from Colorado State University for his teaching and advising. He and his wife Cynthia have moved back East to Quincy, MA, to be near family.

She Who Became the Sun

Shelley Parker-Chan

"Mulan meets The Song of Achilles in

Parker-Chan's novel She Who Became the Sun, a bold, queer, and lyrical reimagining of the rise of the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty from an amazing new voice in literary fantasy.

When the Zhu family’s eighth-born son, Zhu Chongban, given the fate of greatness, dies during a brutal attack, his sister, escaping her own fated death, uses her brother’s identity to claim another future altogether—her brother’s abandoned greatness."
