Keynote Speaker John Sileo

We're excited to share that cybersecurity expert John Sileo will be our primary keynote on Wednesday, November 30! Learn a little more about him below.
John Sileo left hi-tech consulting and became an entrepreneur to reclaim his greatest priority - being present for his family. Six successful years, a thriving $2M business and two precious daughters later, he lost it all to cybercrime. Because the criminal masked the crimes using John's identity, Sileo was held responsible for the felonies committed. The losses destroyed his company, decimated his finances and consumed two years as he fought to stay out of jail. And from these bitter circumstances, John made lemonade.

John Sileo is an award-winning author and highly sought-after cyber expert from 60 Minutes to the Pentagon, USA to Rachel Ray. His satisfied clients include a Who's Who of the Fortune 1000, Government, Associations and Small Business. The CEO of a Denver-based cyber think tank, an honors graduate from Harvard University and an inductee into the National Speakers Hall of Fame, John still values his remarkable wife and highly spirited daughters over all other successes.

Featured Member: Najeeb Qasimi
Najeeb is the Director of IT at Oak Grove School District. He was kind enough to tell us a little about himself, his background, and his experience being a CITE member.
How long have you been in your current role and how did you get there?
"I have been in my current role at Oak Grove SD (OGSD) since 2011. I joined OGSD as Manager of IT and was later promoted to Director of IT in 2016. Prior to Oak Grove, I was a Network Engineer for Berryessa USD for seven (7) years. I have a BS with concentration in Business Management from San Jose State University and various technical certifications as well as a recent graduate of CTO Mentor Program from CITE."
How long have you been a CITE member? What is your favorite memory from a CITE event?
"I have been a CITE member since 2011 when I took my first leadership position at Oak Grove SD as an IT Manager. The first conference I attended was one of my favorites because I was in the company of other individuals in the same realm of technology in education. It was great to attend various sessions and learn from my peers as well as being exposed to many different vendors that were either presenting or had a booth at the exhibition hall. The conference also helped open doors to networking with a lot of my peers in after hours events in a casual setting."

What do you do in your (limited) free time?
"At times that free time definitely has been limited. Aside from spending that time with my family and friends, I ride my motorcycles. I'm fortunate to have had the ability to experience riding the Pike's Peak and Million Dollar Highway in Colorado, Hawk's Nest in Upstate New York and The Tail of the Dragon in the Great Smoky Mountains. My goal every year is to at least get to ride my bike on some of the greatest roads in the US."

Are there any special shoutouts you'd like to give to someone in your life or the CITE Community who has made a special impact on you?
"Family first of course, as they have been the driving force behind all my achievements and if I have ever wanted to better myself, it was with them in mind and with their blessing and support behind me. Additionally, it has been a privilege knowing some of the greatest individuals in our small group of IT professionals in K12 education. Everyone has always been very willing to help and provide their feedback when needed. I recently went through the CITE CTO Mentor Programs (Cohort 15!!!!) and I appreciated the support of my Mentor Dave Ragsdale, Laurel Nava and all the members of my cohort. With work and family, going through the program can be challenging, but the support is what helped my power through and complete it. I also want to thank my Oak Grove Team for being understanding and supportive during this program and my entire time at Oak Grove. Surrounded by this group of driven, caring, and supportive professionals, we have been able to accomplish a lot at Oak Grove SD. Lastly, I would like to also acknowledge the support I have received from my CBO, Laura Phan and Superintendent, José Manzo, throughout the years on all matters of technology for our district."

CSPA Training
CITE developed the California Student Privacy Alliance (CSPA) , a partnership with the Access 4 Learning Community's Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC). CITE has joined this consortium on behalf all schools in the state of California.

The free membership to CSPA provides:

A statewide agreement that districts can use to ensure that the vendor is aware of and complies with California's student data privacy laws.

A searchable database of applications and vendors who have signed the statewide agreement with at least one school or district.

This database creates transparency for teachers, parents, and others to determine if an application is compliant. It also creates an inventory of apps being used and a way for teachers to request that a new application be vetted by their organization.

In order to access the database, you must complete CSPA training first. Each module will focus on one topic and last for one hour. Modules can be taken consecutively or on different dates depending on your schedule. Note: Modules 1 and 2 are mandatory before you'll be given a login to the database.
Module 1: Understanding the CA-NDPA. An in-depth explanation of the contract and how/why it was created.
April 27th 10am - 11am
Module 2: The CSPA Database. What is the Alliance? How does it help my LEA to gain compliance with Student Privacy?
April 27th 11am - 12pm
Module 3: Next Steps. A hands-on, step-by-step tutorial of how to use the site to add, maintain and update your contracts.
May 4th 10am - 11am
