2020 STEM Scale Up Professional Development

Educators across NW Iowa are attending STEM Scale-Up Professional Development training virtually this summer. Educators applied for programs they were interested in integrating into their curriculums earlier this year.  Virtual trainings proved to be be quite effective. Some of our Scale-Up Providers were able to provide hands-on materials during the professional development making the trainings interactive and hands-on. Excitement is building among our educators as they learn about our wonderful STEM programs and materials!

STEM Teacher Externs Collaboration
Teachers across Iowa who participated in the STEM Teacher Externship Program met virtually to share their experiences.  Teachers spend 6 weeks in a business in the summer and learn more about the business, participate in quality improvement discussions, and work on a project relating the business skills they are using each day in the world of work to their classroom curriculum. Teachers are given a $4500 stipend and can earn 3 Graduate Credit hours.

With this meeting being virtual, we we able to have many of our business partners join us.  Some have already participated in the Externship program, and some joined to learn more about the program and become potential new partners. Many of the educators and business partners expressed positive, long lasting, and impactful experiences.

In response to the sudden shift from classroom learning to at home learning, the STEM Council has launched Teachable Moment - a collection of lessons and activities that are right at your fingertips and easy to implement at home. Students, parents and educators will find free access to resources from STEM Scale-Up Program providers, direct links to our Pinterest boards and some of our favorite pinned activities, lessons from partners and much more.

Check out Teachable Moment today at www.IowaSTEM.gov/TeachableMoment.

Help spread the word! Share information about Teachable Moment and your experiences with the lessons and activities on our website using #TeachableMoment.
