London ULEZ expansion forces members to sell their Figaro
Last Monday (25 October 2021), saw the existing central London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expanded to create a single larger zone up to, but not including, the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205). Now having to pay £12.50 a day, for many of our members living in London, it could mean an additional cost of £3,250 a year if they use their car for work. Even for those lucky enough to own a Figaro as a second car, this could work out at an additional cost of £650 a year if they use the car on a Saturday or Sunday.

The introduction of the expansion has seen both a cancelling of club membership and a higher than normal level of cars go up for sale on our Figaro Trader site. We understand that many owners are holding on to their cars in the hope that something can be done further down the line.

According to Tobyn Brooks from The Figaro Shop, the problem is there is no 'standard report' currently existing for the Figaro. This means the first car tested has to have an extensive WLTP cycle examination in order for a report to be written.

Costs from the official WLTP cycle test run at Millbrook test station are currently very high with the first car tested costing circa £30,000 and tests after that running at around £500 per car, plus the specialist exhaust system. Read more

Thank you letter from a mum
We wanted to share with you a letter written from a mother called Amira to club founder Kevin last month. It contains the story of a little girl named Sumayyah. Sumayyah has been in and out of the hospital with leukaemia since she was 19 months but now, through the generosity of our member's donations during the 30th Birthday Party in June, she is attending school and according to mum is a very bubbly, chatty and curious girl with a wild imagination! Manual gearbox conversion
The Figaro Shop contacted us regarding converting the automatic gearbox to a 5-speed manual transmission. They claim the car goes faster after the conversion, due to the gearing

We asked workshop manager Mark White what the cost would be and he stated in the region of £1,950+ but the actual figure depends on the cost of the donor parts and their availability and condition. Read more
Do not use E10 in your Figaro
If you are located in the UK, you may notice a new E10 fuel on the forecourt. Although there appears to be a difference of opinion, The Figaro Owners Club does not recommend using E10 in your Figaro.

This is because at the time of writing there is no information concerning the prolonged effects of using it. E10 contains 10% of ethanol and we understand the continued use (over time) of this level of bioethanol’s with its ‘corrosive properties’ may end up damaging parts of the engine such as seals, plastics, and metals including the fuel tank if the car is left for a long period with E10 Fuel in the tank. New UK sticker rules for driving in Europe
As of September 28th 2021, British motorists driving their home registered Figaro in Europe must use the new ‘UK’ sticker on the rear of the car. In the past, you would attach a GB sticker but the term ‘Great Britain’ refers to England, Scotland and Wales. While the term ‘United Kingdom’, in fact, refers to each of these areas... Read more

Words and Pictures John Longworth. It’s been rough for lots of people during lockdown not seeing friends, getting bored with nothing to do but looking at the TV, TV, and more TV. Glove compartment hinge repair
We heard from member Marilyn Glove about how she repaired the glove compartment. "The hinge was broken so I took the door screws out, made a new hinge out of some vinyl marking the screw holes on the door and hinge piece and screwed it all back together.

Clarion offer DIRECT support!!
We wanted to remind everyone that Clarion still offer a full repair and upgrade service. They got in touch recently saying that they had heard some Figaro owners had paid in excess of £1,000 for upgrades which if they had gone direct would have only cost them between £300-£400 hundred pounds!

Clearly, there are some very unscrupulous people out there trying to make money by offering this service but you do not need to go through a third party and can go direct. Read more

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW...
The image that makes us smile :)
London based member William Alms sent us this amazing picture of his pale aqua Figaro. He told us that a few weeks back he proposed to his girlfriend with a Figaro as it had been her dream car for as long! We assume she said yes as he goes onto to say they both love it and have found our club's videos really helpful and interesting and can't wait to do some work to get her looking really good.

However, as London dwellers, they are really worried about the new ULEZ rules and are fearing that they may have to sell her unless we can find a solution. The misery continues last week the extended zone came into force!
30th Birthday Anniversary

Our Japanese members have been in touch regarding an amazing event last weekend. With the backdrop of Shizuoka, a Japanese prefecture on central Honshu’s Pacific coast and the home to 3,776m-tall Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest peak, our members enjoyed a brilliant day of sharing their love of the car.

Due to translating issues, the info was a bit sketchy but we thought you would love to see the pictures.

Olive Scoops Two Awards at Nottinghamshire Classic Car and Motor Bike Show
Words and Pictures David & Clare Edwards

My wife Clare had always wanted a Figaro and admired them for 15+ years, but due to having twins, it was never a practical choice for her. But now the boys are 16 yrs old the time was right. We have had Olive for just under a year, we didn’t have a big budget so had to buy one that needed some work doing, so we bought Olive. We have worked really hard on her all year, she needed a new turbo, welding, new paint, interior repair and deep cleaning, heater matrix and air-con…we did all the work ourselves and only had help for the re-gas of the Air-con.

"We did not expect her to win her year category as the arena was packed with beautiful classics, but she did, we were overjoyed and quite emotional"

We were so proud of her that we decided to take her to the Nottinghamshire classic car and motorbike show on August 30th 2021… she was popular and had a lot of people wanting to ask questions and just chat. We decided to put her in the exhibition arena as my wife really wanted a plaque which everyone got for taking part, we did not expect her to win her year category as the arena was packed with beautiful classics, but she did, we were overjoyed and quite emotional.
She was automatically entered into the car of the show category, to join cars that won their category from the 1950s to our category 1990s. How overjoyed we were when she won the car of the show, we were so shocked, but she did look rather fabulous.

She will be coming off the road over winter for further maintenance and who knows we might try a couple more shows next year.
HOW TO
Upgrade Instrument Lighting
If you’ve driven your Figaro in the dark and the lighting on both the Speedometer & Tachometer is poor, the chances are it still contains the original tungsten bulbs
Words & Pictures Kevin Fagan

With the nights drawing in, you may consider upgrading the instrument lights. The job is a bit fiddly and involves removing each dial to gain access to the old bulbs and insert the new LED bulbs.
BEFORE
The reason the old bulbs go dark is when you turn on the lights, the tungsten filament inside the light bulb is heated white-hot. After hours at this high temperature, some of the metal “boils off” just like steam from water. The black colour is a thin layer of tungsten metal on the glass.
AFTER
The solution is to replace the bulbs but it makes much more sense to upgrade the latest LED’s (light-emitting diodes) as these use less current, are shockproof and last much longer. To do this, you will need to remove the meters to gain access to the bulbs on the rear, remove each bulb.
LED SPECIFICATION
  • Light Colour: White (although you can choose other colour’s)
  • LED Type: 5050 SMD
  • Base Type: T5 Neo Wedge
  • Base Diameter: 12mm
  • Working Voltage: 12V DC
  • You will require 6 (Tachometer – 2 LED’S & Speedometer – 4 LED’S)
WHERE TO BUY
You have a choice of trying to buy off the internet by Googling the above Specification or the LED’s are available now through The Figaro Shop

Girlfriend To Many Wins Best Foreign Car Award
Fanchette received the Best Foreign Car award. The awards were beautifully hand-crafted by a local artist and made from car parts.
Words & Pictures Glenn Rader

Glenn Rader and Karen Bartos live in the Detroit, Michigan area in the US. They own a fully restored, award-winning, Figaro built by The Figaro Shop in Didcot, England. They purchased the car and imported it to the US in 2019. The car’s name is Fanchette, one of the characters in the opera The Marriage of Figaro (Fanchette is described as the “girlfriend to many” in the opera notes)
During the warmer months, there are several car shows in the Detroit area. One of these, The Detroit Dream Cruise, is billed as the largest car show on the planet, with an estimated 40,000 cars and over 1.5 million spectators participating. The Dream Cruise includes a one-day “cruise” of a ten-mile stretch of urban road, Woodward Avenue, where people display their cars to the crowds of enthusiasts.

Due to the large number of cars, there is no judging or awards given at The Dream Cruise. Here is an example of one of the more unusual cars that showed up at “The Cruise”.
In addition to the Dream Cruise, there are many smaller car shows in the Detroit area, usually involving 100-300 vehicles, where awards are given. The categories of judging vary from show to show. Over the past two years, Fanchette has won four awards:

Best 1981-1994 Stock Vehicle
• Best in Show (ten cars included in this category)
• Best Original Restoration, and
• Best Foreign Car

Most of the awards at these car shows come in the form of a trophy or plaque of a more conventional form. At the car show where Fanchette received the Best Foreign Car award, Glenn and Karen got a nice surprise. The awards were beautifully hand-crafted by a local artist and made from car parts.
Any questions regarding Fanchette, including the Figaro Shop restoration and the process of importing a car to the US, can be directed to Glenn at glenn@noovoo.com
HOW TO
Repair The Rubber Trim
One of the most common areas to deteriorate over time is the rubber trim that sits between the chrome trim that runs around the car's bodywork. Here we look at a solution to fix this issue
Words and pictures Kevin Fagan

If you look closely at the chrome trim you will see that they are all finished with rubber seals/gaskets to not only protect the bodywork from damage from the hard stainless steel, but also as a finisher of the strips. Over time the rubber hardens and cracks or crumbles off which looks unsightly.

The Figaro Shop have created a self-adhesive rubber seal with the same profile which can be applied to the trim. You will need to remove the trim from the car and cut off the existing trim. The process is not too time-consuming and the results are brilliant.
The common area that crumbles away appears to be at the front of the car. Here you can see and before and after picture.
NOTE REGARDING POSSIBLE SHRINKING IN HEAT AFTER INSTALLATION
We did hear a few concerning stories from some members who claimed that after installing the strips they appeared to wrinkle in the heat which look unsightly.

We asked The Figaro Shop for a comment and they said: After over 1,000m so far of this, we have not personally seen any issue with shrinking but a simple solution would be to apply some double-sided tape (tape only, not the foam-backed variants) on the other side of the seal before fitting it to the body of the vehicle. Once the chrome is clipped down to the body, it should squeeze the rubber seal between the chrome and body keeping it firmly in place. We have fitted and sold countless kits with great results so I would say that it could be that the clips holding the chrome are not secure enough…but every car does differ so the double-sided tape solution would work really well. Dutch Figaro After Summer
Tour 2021
News from Holland on a fun day out for our Dutch members
Words & Pictures: Pascal & Joyce - Sunday, 26th of September

GreetingWith the 30-year jubilee in mind, we thought to visit a special part in the Netherlands. And yes, Zeeland is very special. A beautiful part of the Netherlands that is quite undiscovered for car rallies. The first idea with Zeeland is that it’s flat and mainly connecting roads. Locals were very enthusiastic and convinced us to let the world-famous “Delta werken and the Zeelandbrug” be part of our Figaro Nazomer Tour.

A car event in Zeeland without those 2 highlights doesn’t deserve the name car event they told us. Our Rally shield was again designed by 05 Studio, South Korea. After the Lapis Grey edition in 2019 and the Emerald Green edition in 2020 for this year, Youngho made a Topaz Mist edition for 2021 for us. So extra nice we had:

  • 4 Topaz Mist
  • 6 Lapis Grey
  • 4 Emerald Green
  • 1 Pale Aqua
  • 3 Custom colours

This makes the list of 18 attendees complete. We had hidden letters to find during the day, pictures to recognize and questions to answer.
In the end, the Pink Figaro from Gwenda & Jelmer scored the most points and were the winners of the 2021 Figaro Nazomer Tour. A lovely car-related trophy was waiting for them. We had a great deal organized with the Boutique Hotel ter Zand for a nice diner and a reduced price for an excellent hotel room, for the ones who wanted to join.

In the end, we look back on a great Figaro event. Joyce and I are already thinking about where to go for 2022.
One item will be no surprise anymore……. The rally shield will be in Pale aqua.
The Ultimate 25th Wedding Anniversary Gift!
Read this amazing story of how Mia got the surprise of her life
Words and Pictures by Mia Braine
In the town where we live, I have on occasion seen a Figaro, and I became slightly obsessed. Earlier this year we went to London for a week, and we saw three different Figaro’s, and I took photos of, and with two of them. The third one was being driven by a lovely lady and I had to stop and watch it for as long as I could see it.

Then, last Monday, I handed in my dissertation after four years of study, and I decided to go to York for the day on Tuesday. When I got back from York, my husband waited for me at the train station. He was standing next to a Topaz Mist Figaro. I thought it was the one I had seen in our town before, that just happened to be parked there at the time. So I went closer, had a look, and joked with him that if it was his car, he’d have been leaning on the bonnet. But that is when he got a key out of his pocket and gave it to me. At first, I just stared at him and couldn’t quite comprehend what was happening. Then he said that it is an anniversary gift, (we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary in November), and congratulations on completing my studies gift! I was totally blown away!
I never expected such a gorgeous gift and I am so blessed and happy. I haven’t stopped smiling since. Like most Figaro’s, she needs a bit of work doing, but that is all part of the experience.
The photos above are of me and my friend going out in her, (the previous owner called her Bella, and I am keeping the name), for the first time.

Norfolk Figaro Day Trip 2021
Eastern Chapter Coordinator, Adam Woods pulls off another amazing day with a lovely crowd of people, who together, share the joy of enjoying the Norfolk countryside in a fleet of Figaros!
Words & Pictures by Adam Woods – 12th September 2021

What a Summer it has been! The amazing 30th Birthday bash set the benchmark, followed by our Suffolk Day Trip in July, Helmingham Hall Classic Car Show in August, and then this the Norfolk Day Trip in September! We had hoped to end our day trip across Norfolk at Cromer, parking up on the front, but after lots of enquiries there was no way we could persuade the local council to make it happen, so we needed to come up with a plan B that members could really enjoy!

Members numbering 16 cars and 37 humans met and parked up in the rear gardens of “Sea Marge” boutique hotel in Cromer where many had pre-ordered breakfast, ready for the day ahead! Fantastic to see some now-familiar faces along with some people we had not been lucky enough to meet before – always so wonderful to meet Figaro members who are always so fun and full of life!
So, we headed out from Overstrand, along through to Cromer, through the centre and round to the front in a fleet of Figaros beep-beeping our horns at everyone who waved and pointed and smiled. From Cromer, we headed out across the country through Bodham, past Holt and through Letheringsett until we arrived at our stop at “Back to the Garden” a lovely converted barn with butchers, deli and shop and amazing organic food. The venue had kindly set an area aside for us so that we could park up our cars and get a bit to eat and do a bit of shopping.

Next was a journey across the country again through Glandford, Wiveton, Morston and Stiffkey, and then onto Wells-next-the-Sea where our convoy greeted locals and tourists with our beep-beeps, creating quite a spectacle as Figaro after Figaro passed through… and then finally onto our final destination Holkham Hall, an 18th Century Palladian style house set in a thriving 25,000 acre estate!
For Holkham, we had arranged special access up their drive from the South, and my goodness what a long drive that was with so many Figaros out in the sun! Along the drive, past the famous obelisk, and sweeping round towards the front of the hall where we had arranged for our Figaros to park up in pride of place! So popular is this venue that there were already some vintage tractors booked to park up in the morning before us.

"As we were a little early our cars and the tractors made for an interesting spectacle for all the hall’s visitors on what became a sunnier and sunnier day… they were soon gone though, and then followed quite a stream of visitors coming to have a look at our lovely collection of cars!"

Members could then enjoy the rest of the day as they wished with the Hall, grounds and the discounted entry we had for the Walled Gardens which were quite a sight. Another amazing day with a lovely crowd of people, and the joy of enjoying the Norfolk countryside in a fleet of Figaros! What more can you ask?

Here’s to the next day trip… a little shorter, but taking place on Hallowe’en and concluding at a once-secret Nuclear Bunker!

Rosalita Undergoes Surgery
Would she pull through? Was she destined for the great breakers yard in the sky? Could a miracle happen? So many questions. Why her, why now? What if she doesn’t get better...
Words and Pictures by Ian Mckeen

In the beginning, God created heaven and Earth. The Earth was without form, and void and darkness. And God said, “let there be light” and there was light.

Billions of years later in 1977, the rock band AC/DC followed this with; Let there be sound, and there was sound. 44 years on from this, Jill said “let there be music”, wishing to hear the great sounds of Bruce Springsteen coming from the stereo in her beloved Figaro. But there wasn’t any. Rosalita was poorly. She had succumbed to the pandemic that had befallen many of us over this past year. She was hot to touch, losing fluids and her seats were sticky. She was in need of emergency surgery.

Jill didn’t know what the outcome would be. Would Rosalita pull through? Was she destined for the great breakers yard in the sky? Could a miracle happen? So many questions. Why her, why now? What if she doesn’t get better? She would leave an empty void. (Well, an empty garage at least). There was no other option, Jill had to phone for assistance. Help was dispatched and Rosalita was manoeuvred onto the car ambulance. She was on her way to the Figaro hospital. Would Jill see poor Rosalita again?
Fearing the worst, Jill had started to pace up and down with a bottle of her favourite tipple in one hand and a bar of chocolate in the other. She moped around for days dreading that fateful phone call. I on the other hand had started to plan a workshop for the now empty garage.

And then it happened, that call, Jill went quiet. She started to shed a tear. I thought OMG what can I do? It was then that Jill said Rosalita was going to be fine. She was at that time of life where changes happened. She was in need of HRT (Hose Replacement Therapy).
Well, to say I became emotional was an understatement, not because Rosalita was coming back, but because I had just lost my workshop. My dreams had been shattered. I had so many plans. I had already given my tools a liberal buffing. My workbench was built and ready to go. It was then that I realised that once again, I had lost out to this remarkable little gem of a car. Jill’s Figaro, Rosalita. (See my previous article from 2017 where I lost & gained brownie points).
Rosalita returned. She was fixed. Her cooling system was now cooling. The HRT was working. She kept all her fluids in and was looking fantastic once again. Better than this, Jill was happy. What more could a man want? A workshop would have been nice though. On her return, I took the opportunity to add my own touch to Rosalita by stripping and refurbishing the seats. Lots of hard work, but as you can see the rewards have paid off.

Rosalitas next adventure will be as the main wedding car for our niece. A perfect tribute to this fantastic little car (see above).

We would like to say a massive thank you to the guys at The Figaro Shop. Without them, Rosalitas destiny would have been different.

What an amazing job. You are real professionals. Thank you sooooooooooo much

We love to read the newsletter. Wish we could come to many of your events, however, that big block of water between us is just too much of a challenge for regular, or even irregular, crossing. I wanted to organise an event at Uluru (Ayres Rock) to celebrate 30 years this year. Sadly some very significant health issues in the last 2 years and then covid19 thwarted the plans. I liked the location as it is essentially the middle of Australia and an iconic spot for photos. Accommodation there and you and your figgy could come on a train too if not wanting to drive the huge distances. I was also considering Alice Springs as the train comes there. Lots of incredible day trips are doable from there in the red desert of Australia.

We (me and my girlfriend Hanna) love to travel actually with an open roof and our dog „Laya“ on the rear seats. So choose the one which fits best for you (only our dog is also fine :D )

Thank you so much for your email. The video is absolutely brilliant. It looked like a wonderful celebration, and I’m sad I missed it. I can do relate to everyone in the film. I’ve had my figgy for almost 2 years now and it is a joy, and just makes people smile as I’m driving by. I will definitely try to get along to an event in the Easter region soon.

HOW TO
Remove your seats
There are a few reasons you may wish to remove your seats, be it re-dying the carpet or restoring your seats
Words & Pictures Kevin Fagan

Front Seat Removal
These are pretty simple, just remove the 4 x 12mm bolts and the seat will be free to take out. Just make sure when you re-insert the bolts that you do not cross-thread them by forcing the bolt to rotate when it doesn't feel right. This can happen when the bolt is not at 90 degrees to the carpet. A good tip is to try turning the bolt with your fingers first, rather than using a spanner. If it is stiff then apply some grease to the bolts thread to help it into the tapped area.

Rear Seat Removal
If the front seats are still in place, push them as far forward as you can and then position yourself in between the two seats (see pics/video). Holding the seat base with both hands, give it a sharp tug upwards. The seat base will become free to remove. Now you will see 2 x 10mm bolts that need to be removed. Now pull up the rear seat and it will become free.

How the club started
Our son Daniel had always wanted a Figaro having seen the car at his local garage when he was just 16. After saving for a number of years (plus a small contribution from his mum and dad!) he, at last, brought an emerald green model in May 2008. See him pictured with Figgy aged just 19 bless him >>

Following the purchase, we searched on the internet for a club in the hope we could attend events and meet other owners. We were amazed that at that time no club existed so the Figaro Owners Club was born!

"We decided to build a basic website and forum which took a few months and on the 1st March 2009, pressed the publish button and waited to see if anyone wanted to join? Within a week we had 10 members, a month 35 and a year 478!"

Today the club has around 1,300 members worldwide in countries including New Zealand, Japan, Australia, USA, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden and many more.
