Marina Water Shut Off Tuesday,
September 1, 2020 - 5:00 AM - 8:00 AM
The City of Monterey has contracted out the replacement of the 6" main fire line down Wharf 2, the Commercial Wharf. Coming up next week they will be replacing the back flow preventer which requires us to shut down water to the majority of the marina, washing machine, showers, restrooms (public and boaters).

The Wharf 2 Fire suppression shutdown is scheduled for a water system shutdown Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at 5 a.m., this process should take 2 to 3 hours. This will affect the following.

1. The Marina
2. Harbor Office
3. Restrooms (Boaters/ Public)

This should not affect any of the restaurants. Also, the contractor has preassembled the double check valve - backflow preventer to help expedite the replacement process. Both the contractor and CalAm are on board so we plan to proceed on schedule.

The fillet replacement program is going well and G-Tier is almost complete. The next tier scheduled for dock box fillet replacement is I-Tier. There are a few things to remember over the next couple of years as we progress through-out the marina docks:

(1) On the weekdays the fillets are being replaced the water for the tier will be shut off for the day
(2) Electricity will be shut down on any tier the team is working on
(3) Berth licensees will receive a phone call the weekend before when their fillets will be replaced. We will ask you to unlock and clear out your dock boxes so they can be removed for the fillet replacement
Scott Krivanek - Sail Out Memorial
Scott Krivanek passed away unexpectedly on August 14, 2020 at age 48. Scott is a pro sailor, racer, boat repair for all the trades, and always had a contagious smile. Scott was known by many in Monterey. You could either find him working at Monterey Bay Boat Works, on a sailboat, or riding his bike. There is a Sail Out memorial scheduled on Sunday, September 6th from 5 pm to 6 pm. Scotty will be missed by many for his bright personality and his skills on the water. Our prayers and thoughts are with Scott, family, and friends during this difficult time.

Leon was a USCG Officer, four of those years was at Coast Guard Station Monterey. Leon spent most of his life on or near the water. Leon's special voice was unmistakable on the VHF Radio. He was always calm, cool, and, collected even when things were not so. Regarded by many as the quintessential captain in Monterey. Carpet on Finger Docks - Please do not install
We have noted carpeting like material covering the side of the dock which inhibits ventilation to the galvanized all-thread fasteners and the horizontal systems that binds the dock, floats, and under-structure together. The problem sometimes manifests itself when we attempt to repair uneven floats, loose (whalers) side boards or a twisted dock. We discovered in a few areas where the all-thread fasteners had corroded completely due to moisture being trapped. When this occurs the all-thread sometimes shears off or the threads strip when we attempt to reset the floats and level the fingers and docks. Unfortunately, we cannot see the corrosion until the damage is done and it is time consuming and intensive to replace these galvanized all-thread through bolts that can measure 3 feet to 6 feet long, these components should last a lifetime.

If the carpeting on your dock was already installed when you received the berth from the City of Monterey, we, the Harbor Maintenance Staff, will remove it free of charge. Simply let us know. If not, we are asking you to please remove and discard the material within the next 45 days.

Sec 17.38 Modifications of Berths
No steps or boxes, other than dock boxes, shall be placed on or fastened to the dock without the Harbormaster’s consent. Carpeting or any attachments that retain moisture or prevent ventilation are expressly forbidden. No modifications to the berth will be allowed except those done by the City staff, or performed by vessel owners with prior written approval of the Harbormaster. Vessel owners will be billed for any labor and materials necessary to correct violations of this section. (Ord. 3548 § 2, 2016)

Please understand our efforts are to maintain the marina and harbor docks in the best possible condition for as long possible, your help is critical in this mission and we are asking you to partner with us in this maintenance issue.

Winter Tides are Around the Corner
As most boating enthusiasts either know or quickly learn, tides are lower in winter because that's the time of year in which the moon is closer to the earth – creating higher tides due to the gravitational pull of the moon. These tides are higher for a longer lasting period of time
