Fostering, The Volunteer Job That Saves Lives!
Meet Scrap's foster mom, Kristen. She shares that fostering scrap is such a joy. During a recent short hike around "Blueberry Hill" with Scrap and Kristen, we learned that at 5 years old, Scrap loves being outdoors. This big boy is crate trained and housebroken. He loves people and and car rides too. Someday soon, it is their great hope that Scrap will find his forever home, but in the meanwhile, he continues to thrive with his foster home. Kristin is taking such good care of Scrap, dare we say- he is getting a little bit spoiled?? Nah, they are great pals!

Some rescue pets do far better outside the shelter with the attention and love that a foster can provide, like Scrap. Some rescue pets absolutely require a foster setting, like Rico. Rico is a good boy who is riddled with anxiety that is exacerbated through shelter life. In his foster home, Rico is a different dog, one that loves to play and cuddle. Rico needs a forever home for sure, but we have an urgent need for a new foster for Rico. His current foster family is moving and cannot continue to give him the continuity he so desperately needs.

Considering a volunteer position as a foster like Kristen? To be a foster provider means to have a shelter pet in your home temporarily. Through welcoming a foster like Scrap or Rico into your home, you are increasing our capacity to care for more animals. For every one animal in foster care, two lives are saved: the animal going into your home and the other animal entering the empty cage. We provide all medical care for foster animals; the foster parent provides, food, water, cat litter(for kittens/cats), and lots of love. Ho! Ho! Ho!- Christmas in July
(all that was missing was the snow!)
When two volunteers, Jenn and Lindsey, who normally work trapping and releasing cats in their communities, approached Executive Director Jill Rawlins with the idea of holding a fundraiser / adoption event at the shelter on July 25, commonly known in South Jersey as "Christmas in July", she off-handedly said sure. She could never have predicted the level of event that was to unfold. Jenn and Lindsey started the full court press pulling off an event with vendors like Dave and Buster's and Teop Taco food truck that brought the tacos and so much more. With over 70 raffle baskets/items, including a Vera Bradley bag from the Gloucester Outlet Stores, over $4900 was raised! More than 1500 people from the local community came out to support the event and many went home with their new fur-ever friend. Kona Ice came in at the end of the day to cool everyone down on this hot, hot day. Stay tuned for next week's newsletter with professional pics, names of the pets adopted and so much more!!! For now, the team needs to put their feet up and toast a great day!
