COVID-19 Legal Meeting
February 7: PPOA representatives hosted their weekly teleconference to assess the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on our membership. Meeting participants included President Nancy Escobedo, Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr., Senior Labor Rep. Venise Wallace, Labor Rep. Teresa O'Neil, Intake Rep. Kevin Thompson and PPOA legal counsel.

Legislative Committee Meeting
February 7: The PPOA Legislative Committee took part in a teleconference with our full-time Sacramento legislative representatives — Lang, Hansen, Giroux and Kidaneto engage in the monthly discussion about legislation that impacts or could potentially impact PPOA members and public safety employees statewide. For perspective, the California Assembly and Senate collectively introduced more than 2,000 bills in the most recent legislative session.

PPOA's commitment to impactful legislative strategies stretches back to the 1960s and has significantly improved the rights and benefits of generations of PPOA members. Day on the Hill: FOP Reps in Washington DC
February 7: California Fraternal Order of Police (CAFOP) leaders gathered in Washington DC to meet with members of Congress for the annual FOP Day on the Hill. This unique opportunity provided FOP members with direct access to Senators and Representatives in order to advocate for crucial priorities, including an officer safety and anti-crime agenda.

PPOA members have long benefitted from our longtime affiliation with the FOP, the world's largest organization of law enforcement officers, with more than 364,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges nationwide. All active PPOA members are part of California FOP Lodge 1.
PPOA Board of Directors Meeting
February 8: The monthly PPOA Board of Directors meeting was hosted in San Dimas on Wednesday. Directors in attendance included President Nancy Escobedo, 1st Vice President Jay Chapman, 2nd Vice President Tony Coleman, Secretary Chris Lee, Treasurer Joyce Kato, and Board Members Gerry Garcia, Tab Rhodes, Tony Romo, Jose Salgado, and Joe Walker.
Meeting re: Ongoing Support for LASD Academy Class 464
February 9: President Escobedo joined representatives from ALADS, Sheriff's Relief Association, Injury Health and Support Unit and Personnel to discuss continuous support for members of Academy Class 464 who were injured when a vehicle veered into the group while they were on a training run on November 16, 2022.
UPCOMING: First Responders Day at Auto Club Speedway
NASCAR and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) are teaming up on Sunday, February 26, 2023 for the annual First Responders Day at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. A portion of the proceeds will benefit NLEOMF and first responders in attendance will receive a collectible challenge coin.

UPCOMING: LASD Retiree Roundup
Retired PPOA members are encouraged to attend the upcoming LASD Retiree Roundup, scheduled for April 2-5, 2023 in Laughlin, Nevada. This is an opportunity to reunite with more than 1,000 attendees who retired as LASD sworn, professional staff or reserves. PPOA has proudly supported this event for years and we look forward to catching up with longtime friends at the Roundup this year!

Fraternal Order of Police News Update
Important news regarding FOP membership for retired PPOA members: When a sworn PPOA member retires and wishes to reactivate his/her FOP member benefits, the following step must be taken:
 
To reactivate your membership as a retired peace officer, you will need to pay FOP annual dues of $40 for 2023. To do so, please send an email to the FOP Lodge 1 Secretary: wmwestermann@sbcglobal.net. Be sure to include your full name and advise that you are a retired PPOA member requesting membership with FOP.
