Why "Port Angeles Health Youth?"

"We need to stop pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they are falling in," Desmond Tutu. As we move upstream together, we must have a shared purpose that guides our work.

In the last several meetings, we have drafted a shared vision statement. We invite you to review our vision statement as well as a new mission, about, and equity statements. This poll is an opportunity to provide anonymous feedback: www.surveymonkey.com/r/HYCWhoWeAre.

Thank you for sharing your voice.

This year to further ensure the safe storage of prescription medication and other substances, the Port Angeles Healthy Youth Coalition provided Port Angeles residents with a combination Lock bag to take home at no cost. Thank you, Clallam County Sherriff's Office, for welcoming us to partner on this event - congratulations on collecting 94 pounds of expired and unused medications!

While medicines help treat disease, manage chronic conditions, and improve health – unused and expired prescription medications pose a public safety concern. Opioids are now one of the leading causes of injury-related deaths in Washington State. Seventy-five percent of opioid misuse starts with people using medication that wasn't prescribed for them—usually taken from a friend or family member, often without their knowledge. These safe storage efforts aim to protect young people by helping residents safely store prescriptions being used in the home.

October In the Community Activity

Forrest Salad - Canva Banner _2_.png

For this month's "In the Community Activity," we ask our neighbors, friends, and colleagues to complete the annual Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative Community Survey.

  • Who? For residents of the 98363 and 98362 zip-codes.
  • Where? https://tinyurl.com/PAHYCCommunity
  • What? Our funder at Washington Health Care Authority is required to obtain 215 responses to have statistical significance.
  • Why? Provides members of our community with an opportunity to share their insights on the needs facing young people in Port Angeles.

Why does CPWI collect demographic data? We know that diversity makes our community more substantial. Our funders at Washington Health Care Authority who created this survey are committed to increasing the diversity of those served with our funding.

How is this data used? CPWI regularly reviews demographic information to help evaluate disparities in our program outcomes and better serve communities throughout our state. This data will be used in internal program evaluations only. Your data will always be aggregated and shared anonymously.

Youth Concerns Port Angeles

Collaboration, Evidence-based Approaches, Community Mobilization

In celebration of our community-based prevention work, we invite leaders from youth-serving institutions in Port Angeles and Port Angeles Healthy Youth Coalition to open dialogue over brunch.

Together we will identify areas of hope and concern, share resources, update each other on trends and activities, and discover possibilities for collaboration. Our overarching goal is to align services and ensure the community safety net is intact to meet the needs of young people in Port Angeles.
