Anticipating Open Water and Pool Competitions
|
Our state is opening up, and clubs are looking forward to hosting events once again. As tentative dates are set, we will list them on our schedule page and announce them in our Pacific Update newsletter.
As of now, the following two dates for local meets have been approved:
1) Sunday October 3: 17th Annual Alan Liu Memorial SCM Meet
2) Friday thru Sunday October 15-17: Pacific Masters SCM Championships (Host: WCM)
There is one USMS meet also scheduled: October 6-10: USMS LCM Nationals.
Please keep in mind there are many hurdles for event hosts to overcome, and the tentative listing of an event is neither a guarantee that it will take place, nor that it will be open to all.

USMS Try Masters Swimming Month
July 1-31
|
USMS has designated July as Try Masters Swimming Month*. This fun, informal invitation is a great way to introduce new swimmers to Pacific Masters and grow our numbers.
Do you have a friend or neighbor who likes to swim, but thinks they're not good enough to join a team, or prefers to swim only for fitness and/or recreation? Maybe you know of a graduating high school or college senior now finding themselves searching for top-notch competition?
Try Masters Swimming allows newcomers to experience our welcoming organization first-hand, and find a schedule and program that suits their individual needs. Click here to read how Masters Swimming is the answer to all your adult swimming needs.
*Pacific Masters recognizes that this July time frame may not work for many of our member clubs due to COVID restrictions still in place in your county or at your facility. We will support a Try Masters Swimming Month later in the year, possibly October, when we anticipate conditions will be more favorable. If you wish to participate in July, please do. If you wish to wait until the later date, please do. If you wish to participate in both, please do! More information about Try Masters Swimming, with resources for clubs, can be found here.

Never too old...
Brent Hayden, 37, Qualifies for Tokyo Olympics
|
Canadian swimmer Brent Hayden retired from swimming after winning a bronze medal in the 100-meter freestyle event in London, 2012, his 3rd Olympics. However, after admitting he missed competition, he returned to the pool and made a strong comeback 7 years later, in 2019. He recently qualified for Tokyo in the 50-meter freestyle event with a time of 21.82 (just nine-100ths of a second behind his own Canadian record, set in 2009), making him the oldest swimmer to represent Canada in this event.
To learn about Hayden's comeback and how he fell in love with swimming again, read this article.
By contrast, at 14-years-old, Summer McIntosh will be the youngest athlete to represent Canada in the pool (and one of the youngest athletes to compete in Tokyo). She qualified in the 200-meter freestyle with a personal best time of 1:56.19, and the 800-meter freestyle with another personal best time of 8:29.49 (almost 4 seconds under the Olympic standard needed for Tokyo). Born in 2006, Summer McIntosh wasn't even alive when Brent Hayden competed in his first Olympics, Athens, 2004.
Let's never consider ourselves too old (or too young!) to accomplish our goals!
