MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I NEVER LEFT DREUX
Fifty-five years have passed since I graduated from Dreux American High School (DAHS; 1964) and as with you, I have experienced a lifetime of experiences; experiences that are unique to each of us. But, although only 4 years of my life (5%) were spent at Dreux, in many ways I have never left. Some of my b

est friends to this day were my room and class mates, my sisters went t
o Dreux
, I married my girlfriend from Dreux (Carol Hutto; 1964), and thus now have
a sister-in-law that also went to Dreux. These Dreuxites are part of my daily life i
n mind and spirit. In addition, I have made more friends at the DAHS reunions over the years.
In short, I am surrounded by people that played an important part in my life on a daily basis and cannot imagine life without them. It is more than just memories as they have shaped my life so my connections to Dreux are part of me.
Even though DAHS is no longer physically present in the Paris Basin it is still there on the plains of France in my heart and, I hope, in yours. Carol and I have visited the site of the school several times and even with the deterioration of the buildings and their eventual elimination the spirit of the place lives on. Just stepping on the grounds in and around the site of DAHS brings back more memories than can be imagined. Dreux was certainly a transformative and magical place for me and I hope your memories of DAHS are also cherished and are part of you.
Dreux did not just create a common memory; each one of us that was fortunate enough to attend DAHS has unique memories of that special time and beyond. The

DAHS reunion in 2021 will be an ideal venue to meet old friends, make new ones, and share the memories. When we meet again, more memories will be made and, as at past reunions, it will be great to catch up and keep DAHS alive in our hearts. I hope to see all of you there!

Our Reunion Chair, Helen Council Miles '61 and her committee have been hard at work in planning the next DAHS All School/All Class Reunion!
As you see above, the next Reunion will be April 12-14, 2021 in New Orleans, LA! The reunion is for EVERYBODY! It doesn't matter how long you attended or if you actually graduated from Dreux or not, we welcome all former classmates, teachers and staff, to attend!
More information, such as hotel information, reunion fees, and agenda of activities, will be available on both Facebook and the Dreux website in the coming months. For now, we wanted to get the dates and location out to everyone so you can put it on your calendar!
We hope you will plan on joining us and help make this the best one yet!!

Our family began our military travels when I was in Kindergarten. Before receiving orders for France, my Dad was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia; Ashiya AB, Japan; Robins AFB, Georgia; and Langley AFB, Virginia.
We arrived at Dreux in October of 1963, my senior year of high school. I had mixed emotions about leaving my previous high school where I had been very much involved for three years, but I was also excited about the prospect of moving to France. I even audited a French class to prepare myself, having taken Spanish for three years. I can still remember the feeling of ov

erwhelming excitement as we landed in Paris.
My Dad was stationed at Evreux but like so many others we had to live in the trailers on Dreux before we were able to move into housing at Evreux. I'm not sure exactly when that happened but I know it was after Christmas an
d well into the New Year. At that point I joined the other 5-day dorm students making our way to Dreux on Monday mornings and returning home Friday afternoons.
Certain memories of my time at Dreux stand out. The first one was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November of 1963, shortly after I arrived. There was the prom at the George V Hotel in Paris and the senior class trip to Mont St. Michel. I made some very good friends while at Dreux and hated to say goodbye at the end of the school year. Who knew with the coming of the internet, the Dreux American High School Alumni Association, and the Dreux reunions that I would be in the same room talking with many of my classmates again after so many years.
Right after graduation my Dad was reassigned to Chateauroux AB, France and we moved. I was not prepared to return to the US for college so I went to the University of Maryland, Munich Campus for the next two years. What a great experience that was! After returning to the US I eventually got married and put my college education on hold. My husband was a service member and when he was stationed in Hawaii I took the civil service exam and eventually was hired by the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard as a temporary hire. Then I was picked up as a permanent hire by Tripler Army Medical Center. Returning from Haw
aii to San Antonio, TX I was hired by the Air Force. After three years in San Antonio it was on to Germany where I again got a job with the Air Force. During this time I met the University of Maryland Registrar and told her about my time at Munich. She told me the University of Maryland was now giving Associate Degrees and suggested we submit the credits I had already earned. She felt I qualified for their Associate of Arts Degree and she was right. It was at that point I decided it was time to finish what I had started so many years before. For the next two years I took classes at night. When we left Germany I returned to San Antonio and while still working for the Air Force, enrolled in the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to finish my degree. Luckily, because I had enough upper level classes in my major field of study from University of Maryland, I was able to finish my classes at UTSA and have all credits transferred to the University of Maryland. It only took another two years of taking classes at night but I finally earned my degree. I was in the Class of 1989, graduating from the University of Maryland, University College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business and Ma

agement with a concentration in Accounting. I went to Heidelberg, Germany for my graduation ceremony. I wasn't about to miss that!
With that degree in hand I became eligible for training positions within my Air Force agency and in 1989 I was hired as a program analyst. Over the next almost 20 years I held various positions in the financial management field and loved every one! My most outstanding accomplishment was to have been sele
cted as the Air Force's 2003 Outstanding Contribution to Financial Mana
gement and Comptroller - Civilian. Finally in April of 2008 as the Chief, Financial Plans and Programs Division, Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency, Lackland AFB, TX, I retired with 31 years of federal service.
I can't believe it has already been 11 years since I retired! I have stayed quite busy and wonder when I had time to work! When I retired I was a member of two organizations...a ski club (yes, snow skiing) and a single's group. I was the newsletter editor in the ski club for four years and held several positions in the single's group, including president for two years. I stayed active in both those clubs for several years. I continue to travel, and one such trip was in late 2011. A good friend and I decided to live in Europe for three months, and we rented a house in Rochegude in the Provence region of France. Our time there was all we expected and more! We even maintained a blog to document our activities, keeping our family and friends back home up to date on what we were doing.
I have always enjoyed dancing and after returning from Europe
I got more involved in country and western dancing. I could be seen out dancing 3-4 nights a week. What a fun way to get exercise! Another of my passions is train travel and I have taken many trips by train both overseas and in the US. The urge to get on the train and just "ride the rails" is always with me.
As far as family goes, I am no longer married, but I have two daughters and five grandchildren. One of my daughters lives in San Antonio with her three children so I get to enjoy spending time with them. My other daughter lives ab
out an hour outside San Diego, California. She just moved from Palm Springs to the San Diego area so I am looking forward to visiting her soon. Through my love of country and western dancing I met a special guy who brings love and laughter to my life. Oh, and he brings cattle too! I guess I caught the cattle bug from him because I am now the proud owner of a heifer named Buffy and a bull named Milo. I certainly never dreamed cattle would be in my future, although being involved with the cattle reminds me of the years I spent visiting my aunt and uncle on their dairy farm in Indiana. I don't think you are ever too old for new adventures and this is my new adventure. I am excited to see how all this plays out.
NOTE: Nonna serves as Vice President of the Dreux American High School Alumni Association and has also been extremely helpful in the planning of our Reunions in San Antonio.

After Gary and I left Dreux, we married in Rome, honeymooned in Florence, moved to Tachikawa, Japan, where we taught at the high school. I taught English and French as well as French and Chinese adult cooking classes. Our first son was born in Japan and the two younger sons were born in Fort Wayne, IN where Gary was born and raised. We all played tennis and our sons were also i

nvolved in theater, music, soccer and hockey. One son played soccer professionally. another became more active in hockey with his son, who has become a very gifted player as well. A third son is a dentist who takes his son to Haiti every year for a volunteer mission.
At Dreux, I taught English and French from 1960 to 1962, and was a dorm supervisor from 1962 to 1964. This enabled us to travel extensively to Greece, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Vienna and Germany We went to Russia with several other Dreux faculty members. After we were married in Rome, we moved to Tachikawa, Japan where we taught in the American Dependent High School.I taught English and French, as well as adult French and Chinese cooking classes.
My fondest memories of Dreux were directing plays like "Ten Little Indians" where our students excelled. As Junior Class Advisor, I felt my biggest mistake was to have our junior prom in the Eiffel Tower. The year previously, we had had our prom on a river boat cruise on the Seine, but our students assured me, even fifty years later when they "found Miss Osmond on Facebook," that it was well worth all the time and effort. My sister followed me to Paris when I studied at the Sorbonne. She married and stayed there all her life. Her two sons and four grandsons still live in Paris, and our sons have enjoyed visits several with them.

Sadly, we discovered the loss of several alumni as well as faculty/staff since the last newsletter in June. Some passed fairly recently, but there were others who passed over the last several years and we just became aware of their passing. I was able to locate obituaries on several of those listed below and they can be accessed in the "In Memoriam" section of our Dreux website.

Now is a great time to pay/renew Dues if you haven't already. Dues are $40/yr and are based on a calendar year. You can pay for one year or for multiple years if you would like to do so.
I have updated the Dreux website to reflect those who have already paid dues for 2020. For those that have paid for multiple years, I have added that information as well so you will know how far out your dues are paid. (You may need to refresh the Dues page if it doesn't show the 2020 list when you first access the page)

PLEASE remember that you can always opt out of receiving the newsletter if you would like, but PLEASE do not tag or report it as SPAM. That really hurts our ability to continue to do these newsletters using Constant Contact and there are many people who enjoy getting them. We certainly hope you don't opt out, but it is certainly your choice. Dreux American High School was open from 1960-1967. The first graduating class was 1961. The school closed in January of 1967. We have a very active Alumni Association. There
have been 10 major reunions over the past 24 years, the last being held in April of 2019 in San Antonio, TX
