Spotlight On: Photos Needed for Homecoming
|
We need your help as we prepare for Homecoming!
|
Join us for a virtual Homecoming on Sunday, September 20. In anticipation of gathering together, please send us any photos of what you've been doing this summer! We'll show them during the event (details to come soon) so we can catch up and share in each other's lives while we aren't able to do so in person. Please send photos to [email protected]. Thank you! |
This Sunday we are delighted to again welcome Dean Denniston to our pulpit. Dean received his Masters of Divinity Degree from Yale and his BA from Northeastern. He has led King's Chapel in many capacities, including as Senior Warden; Vestry Member; Chair of Personnel; and Chair of Charities and Appeals, providing grants to community partners. Currently Dean leads the ad hoc committee that studied and reported on King's Chapel history of slavery. His group now is discerning how we might create physical and living memorials that honor the enslaved persons subjugated by our members and early ministers. Dean is preaching on this Communion Sunday as part of our series on Exodus. Join us through our video Morning Prayer service to be inspired.

New Spiritual Autobiography Class to Begin: Registration Needed
|
The Rev. Joy Fallon and Cynthia Perkins, leader of our Prayer Circle, will lead a new "Spiritual Autobiography" class for six weeks, beginning in late September. Participants will meet weekly for 90 minutes via zoom to explore how the Spirit has moved through your life since childhood and calls to you today. Each week participants will write a short reflection about their spiritual journey, based on prompts from the Exodus story in the Hebrew Bible, and the experience Moses had in his journey with God. King's Chapel has offered a Spiritual Autobiography Course many times over several decades, and most participants have found it a meaningful way to discover God's involvement in their lives. Participants must be able to commit to all 6 sessions, which will take place either Tuesdays or Thursdays 6:45 - 8:15 PM, beginning the last week in September. Priority will be given to those who have not previously taken a Spiritual Autobiography class. Class size is limited to 8. For more information or to register, please contact Joy at [email protected] or Cynthia ([email protected])

UUSC Disaster Relief: Together in Our Time of Need
|
Hurricane Laura, a Category 4 storm, has passed through the Gulf Coast with devastating force, including widespread flooding, damage to homes and infrastructure, and chemical exposures. But as quickly as it ripped through towns, it has largely left the rapidly changing news cycle.
Families in the region are only beginning to calculate their losses. They will bear those burdens for months, perhaps years, to come. And they know the Atlantic Hurricane season is only just beginning.

Building Restoration Update |
There's lots of progress to report on the restoration work being done on the chapel exterior! Perhaps most impressive is the current repair work being done at the base of the wooden columns with extensive rot. The concrete that encased the wood has been removed, the wood columns were cut to remove the rot, concrete was then filled in, and new solid white oak will be installed.
|
All the painting of the upper cornice and column details is now complete on both elevations, and most of the roof repairs are now done. The re-pointing of the stone exterior walls are also under way. It's been fascinating to learn more about our beautiful, historic building through this restoration work!

Conversations with the History Program: Pioneering Educators & Reformers of King's Chapel
Thursday, September 3 | 5:30 PM | Zoom
|
Go "back to school" with the King's Chapel History Program TONIGHT at 5:30pm for the second half of our two-part program series exploring King's Chapel and its member's roles in education reform throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Did you know that King's Chapel's congregation has a long history of pioneering education reformers and notable educators among its members? Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the church was the spiritual home to a number of influential educators, including advocates for women's education and pioneers in predecessors to distance learning. History Program Director Faye Charpentier will discuss the stories and careers of some of these historical attendees, and explore the lasting influences of their work in the education field.
This virtual event is open to all, but advance registration is required for the 5:30 event. To RSVP, register online here.
Next Week's Topic: The History of the Parish House |
Did you know that 63 & 64 Beacon Street date back to the 1820s, over 130 years before they were purchased by King's Chapel to serve as a parsonage and parish house? As we approach Homecoming weekend, join the History Program for their next "Conversations with the History Program" on Thursday September 10 at 12pm or 5:30pm to learn about the history of these buildings and the families that called them home before King's Chapel moved in. For more information and to receive the Zoom information, contact [email protected].

The King's Chapel Voter Action Initiative met this week and four of us spoke about our volunteer efforts for different get-out-the-vote groups. Of note, Emma Healy, a professor at Bunker Hill Community College and an MDiv student, described an innovative extra-credit civics voting project she's designed for students. With just 60 days left until the election, the KC voter project so far has contacted 896 voters. Outreach to another 365 is underway. 19 parishioners are actively volunteering and 25 people have joined one or more of our lively bi-weekly meetings, lending interest and encouragement. Our goal: To engage 50 parishioners and conduct outreach to 5,000 voters by Election Day. Come join us--just a few hours a week is all it takes! Contact Dorie Seavey for more info, and check out our discussion board. Next meeting: Tu, Sept. 15, 3pm.

Friday Block Party hosted by Rev. Mary Jane Eaton of common cathedral
|
Rev. Mary of common cathedral joined us this past Friday for the weekly Zoom Block Party. It was with grace, humility, and generosity that she shared with us the joy of ministry with her community, our unhoused neighbors living out on the streets in Boston. Rev. Mary highlighted that the path toward equity and economic justice starts with relationships and that King's Chapel has been doing just this, showing up and building relationships with common cathedral parishioners and staff.
If you are interested in donating your time to make lunches for our neighbors for Sunday October 4th, please contact Carol Genovese. Together we can make a difference.

God's Beauty in the Summer Drizzle |
We rejoice with Stephen Score, worshipper at our 9 AM service and long-time art and antiques dealer in Beacon Hill and now Provincetown, MA. His wife Eleanor, an artist, is a member who actively lends her skills to the Church School program. Here Stephen has captured the beauty of small moments. You can watch the video version here. He writes, "Pick a place you like, Keep your camera running, Leave the rest to God...Warhol aimed his camera at something and kept it steady - the Empire State Building. So did Monet, in his own way - the facade of Rouen - then painted that same view in the morning, afternoon and evening..." Enjoy!

Our stewardship giving to King's Chapel continues even as we are not physically together each week. This includes our annual pledges and gifts as well as our ongoing contributions to the Sunday plate. If you have not yet sent in your pledge or gift please do so now and help us in this moment when we truly need it. If you are used to putting money in the Sunday Plate each week to support our community partners and our operating budget, you still can. The loss of this income, about $30,000, has an immediate impact on our community partners and our bottom line. Consider a monthly donation to the Sunday offering--maybe $50,$60,$75, $100 to make up for the lost weeks of attendance. Embracing our stewardship role is a way to joyfully and thankfully support the daily ongoing work that keeps King's Chapel thriving. Thank you.

Internet Fraud - Protect Yourself
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, churches across the nation have seen a steep rise in incidents of internet fraud and scams, especially using ministers' names and targeting church members. So far in the last two months, we've had twenty or more. Please watch out for these. I promise, we will never ask you to send us gift cards. We will never ask for your personal identifying information or bank account info. If we ever purport to say that we can't be reached by phone, be suspicious.
Some other hints to protect yourselves: Double check the "from" address to see who really has sent it, and double check the email of the person to whom you're supposedly replying. Verify suspicious emails by phone, especially if the email says not to call. Click the link below for more information on how to protect yourself and your family from internet crime.
