Town of Orangetown
Your weekly news & updates
Dear Residents -

Sadly, we have seen a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in certain zip codes in Rockland County. Fortunately, the number of active cases in Orangetown remains relatively low. Fearing another shutdown of our region, I was pleased to hear that the State is going to take a more targeted approach to address these hot spots. With that said, we all need to be vigilant because our fight with COVID-19 is not over. As of yesterday, every zip code in Orangetown had at least one active case. I implore everyone to continue to avoid large indoor gatherings, to social distance when possible and to wear a mask when it is not.

By now, eligible participants should have received a letter from me regarding Rockland Community Power. Participating in this program allowed the Town to band together with the Town of Clarkstown and the Villages of Nyack, South Nyack, Haverstaw and Upper Nyack to leverage our buying power and offer residents competitive fixed rate electricity pricing. Please read your options, but know that you have until October 28th to either do nothing and stay with the standard fixed-rate option, opt-up to 100% New York State sourced renewable energy, or opt-out and stay with the Orange and Rockland standard variable rate default plan. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Joule Assets at (845) 859-9099 or attend the virtual information session being held on October 14th at 7 pm – for more details click here.

Ending on a lighter note, please join me on Sunday, October 18, 2020, for the second Orange “Bike” Road Family Day. All cyclists will be required to wear a helmet and must be able to safely ride a bike. For further information or to register, please visit the Parks and Recreation webpage on the Town of Orangetown’s website. It should be a fun day and I am looking forward to seeing all of you out there.

Stay safe and healthy everyone.

Folks, please make sure your cars are locked at night.
Friendly Reminder from your Orangetown Police Department

Adding to an already growing problem of cars being stolen overnight, the Town of Orangetown is entering into the season when thieves target our residential areas for late afternoon and early evening burglaries. As the days are getting shorter and the sun sets before many residents get home from work or school, these homes are seen as easy prey; a dark house advertises that nobody is home.

To help combat these thieves, remember to leave lights on or better yet, install timers. Motion sensors are a great deterrent as well.

Let’s all work together, be great neighbors and look out for one another. If you see something suspicious feel free to contact the Orangetown Police Department at (845)359-3700 and our officers will check it out.
Outdoor Improvement Project Safety Means Call 8-1-1 Before You Dig;
One Call: It’s Easy, Simple, Fast, Free --- And It’s the Law

Two O&R damage prevention technicians team up to locate and mark out underground O&R gas and electric facilities at a home in Nanuet. In the foreground James Misczuk uses a radio detection receiver to Iocate O&R underground gas facilities while J.D. Gallo follows to mark the locations with paint and flags. This procedure warns excavators to avoid digging near the facilities.
The most important piece of power equipment this fall for everyone - from construction contractors to municipal excavators and landscapers to homeowners - isn’t a backhoe, auger, bulldozer or grader.

The most important power tool this fall is the telephone and the easy-to-remember, toll-free, one-stop number 811. That’s the nationwide One-Call Notification System’s phone number --- 811 --- the one number you Call Before You Dig.

By calling 8-1-1 before you dig, you’ll make sure utility representatives can identify for you the facilities they own and operate. That way, your digging does not strike any underground natural gas lines, electric cables, phone lines or water and sewer pipes or other utility infrastructures.

Anyone who damages underground facilities because they did not follow the 8-1-1 regulations and calls at least 2 to 10 working days before starting work are subject to hefty fines and repair costs. And, the risk of a dangerous, even fatal, accident is all-too real if you hit an underground electric or natural gas line.

The “Call 8-1-1 Before You Dig” program notifies O&R of the proposed work site so its qualified technician can locate, mark and identify utility-owned equipment with stakes, flags or paint to clearly mark areas to avoid. It’s easy, simple, fast, free --- and it’s the law.

If you see an active excavation site or digging project, but you don’t see flags or painted markings, please call O&R at 1-877-434-4100 and report the location.

If you smell gas, immediately leave the area and call 911, O&R’s Gas Emergency Hotline at 1-800-533-LEAK (1-800-533-5325), or your local gas utility. You can report gas leaks anonymously.

Pride in Bloom grows in
Rockland County

Because together, we are stronger! The seeds of awareness and acceptance are being sown in Rockland County for the LGBTQ+ community. PFLAG Rockland is proud to debut the Pride in Bloom Art Exhibit and Auction.

Fifty-nine talented local artists have created original floral artworks in support of PFLAG Rockland.

The artists have produced a dazzling virtual garden of artwork in an array of mediums ranging from fiber, ceramics, photography, paintings, and mixed media. The art exhibit and auction will run through October 25, 2020 with all proceeds going to PFLAG Rockland and the artists.

PFLAG Rockland is a non-profit organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their parents and families, and allies. Through peer-to-peer support, education, and advocating for inclusive policies and laws, we keep Rockland County’s LGBTQ+ folks, families, and friends strong.

Make a difference today and support PFLAG Rockland!

Visit the virtual garden art exhibit to see all of the outstanding works and to place an auction bid.
Pet of the Week

Here's Bailey - a Cream Retriever! Just don't call him Bailey's. That's a bit old now.

He hates cats and squirrels but loves terrorizing them! He's also partial to chasing an occasional golf ball then getting chased by the owner!

Not a fan of craft beer or indeed craft beer drinkers either. Although a music fan - anything by Ed Sheeran is out.

He's on a bit of a health trip at the moment and his favorite food is steamed chicken from anywhere exotic!
