Stanford Blood Center Has a Critical Need for
O Blood Types!
Because of higher than normal blood usage at our partner hospitals and a ramp up of elective surgeries, SBC has a critically low inventory of O positive (O+) and the nationwide blood supply for type O blood is depleted.

“Despite the challenging times with COVID-19 having an impact on blood donations, we’ve had an increase in demand for blood products and currently only have a few days’ worth of O positive on hand,” said SBC Spokesperson Ross Coyle. “A single donation can help save the lives of up to three patients, so we’re urging the local community to please consider making an appointment to donate at one of our centers or an upcoming mobile drive as soon as possible.”

While we are critically low for O+ blood, all blood types are needed. Anyone who comes in to donate during the month of October will receive a limited edition SBC #EverydayBrave face mask as a thank you. If you’ve thought about donating before but have never done it, just know that you don’t have to be a superhero to help your community, you just have to be a little bit #EverydayBrave! It’s just about an hour of your time, and you can help patients who need life-saving blood.

To schedule an appointment at one of our donor centers or mobile drives, please visit stanfordbloodcenter.org or call 888-723-7831.

Local County Health Officials Offer Guidance: How to Celebrate Halloween and Día de Los Muertos Safely
Bay Area health officials remind residents that many commonly celebrated Halloween and Día de Los Muertos activities carry high risk for spreading COVID-19. Focusing on decorations, limiting activities to the people you live with, and virtual costume parties or contests will help keep our communities safe this season, especially our children. Together, we all need to do as much as we can to protect ourselves and those around us.

For instance, trick-or-treating is a high-risk activity, because it increases contact with people outside of your household who may not be as careful about COVID-19 prevention. Parties are high-risk, because mixing among people who don’t live in the same home introduces more opportunities for the virus to pass from one person to another. Bay Area contact tracing has shown that gathering and mixing are key contributors to infection.

These holidays are no different from the rest of the year when it comes to reducing the spread of COVID-19. Stay home if you feel sick or have come into close contact with someone who has COVID-19; wear a face covering whenever you leave home; and keep your distance from others (even relatives) who don’t live in your household. Remember that being outside is safer than being inside, especially in combination with face covering and keeping your distance. Consider using a themed cloth mask, as a costume mask is not a substitute. Avoid wearing a costume mask over a protective cloth mask because it can be dangerous if the costume mask makes it hard to breathe.

Hispanic Heritage Month
Tradition and Culture during the Pandemic
This month is Hispanic Heritage Month – where, in normal times, many in our community would be celebrating their traditions and culture with family and friends. But these are not normal times – and we must now find new and safe ways to mark this month.

The pandemic has hit the Latinx community especially hard across the country. Here in San Mateo County, they represent nearly 25% of the population but about 50% of the COVID-19 cases. This year, more than ever, we must find ways to keep our Hispanic community intact, safe and protected during this pandemic.

What can be done in San Mateo County? With many in the Hispanic community living with multiple generations and often in overcrowded conditions, increased testing capacity is a must. And we are working to do just that. Upcoming testing dates with expanded capacity can be found here. It is critical that we continue our outreach that even small gatherings can spread this disease to loved ones, and that wearing a mask is vital to protect those you care about the most. And look for the County’s new Mask Mobile out in the community – helping to save lives with free masks!

We can do this – but our comeback depends on all of us.
