 Nunavut's Summer Bowhead Hunts Get Started in Favorable Weather. Many Nunavut hunters have prepped their gear and their boats to get ready for this year's bowhead whale hunts. But although Ottawa allotted five bowhead tags to Nunavut communities this year - the same number handed out in 2015 - at least one community's hunt has already been called off.

Luxury Cruise Ship Sets Sail for the Arctic. The once forbidding Arctic region, home to polar bears and ice-covered seas, has melted enough that this summer, it's open not only for shipping but high-end tourism. The proof lies in the Crystal Serenity cruise, a luxury tour of the Arctic that promises to carry passengers through the storied Northwest Passage and across the roof of the world. The controversial cruise was scheduled to set sail Tuesday from Seward, Alaska, and dock 32 days later in New York City.

Raytheon Anschutz Provides Gyro Compass System for Two Polar Class Heavy Transport Vessels. Germany-based navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz has provided an advanced gyro compass system for two 25,000 deadweight tonnage (dwt) polar class heavy transport vessels. Designed for operations north of 70° latitude, both the Audax and Pugnax vessels have been built at the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China for Red Box Energy Services.

 [French] Arctic Visit to Monitor Climate Change. Royal, who is also responsible for France's international relations on
climate change, was to leave Paris for Oslo on Wednesday on her way to the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. There she will visit the Emile Victor French Polar Institute, the home of a joint research program with Germany. As well as observing the melting of the polar ice cap, she will be able to see more endangered species, including whales, seals and polar bears whose survival is threatened by global warming.

13th International Conference on Gas in Marine Sediments: September 19-22, 2016 (Tromso, Norway).

intends to bring together geologists, biologists, microbiologist, geophysicists, oceanographers, geochemists and scientists from modeling disciplines. The forum will provide a platform for current knowledge and future programs in gas inventories, fluxes and their role within the carbon cycle and biodiversity. Bridging the Future of Arctic Social Science Research, September 23-24, 2016 (Monticello, Virginia, USA).
The event is sponsored by Arctic Horizons. The event will reassemble the members of the National Steering Committee and a small but diverse selection of representatives from the five regional workshops, to total about 15 people. The aim will be to identify and synthesize the core threads of the previous workshops and public contributions proffered between workshops. The target output for the workshop will be a final report draft and outline of steps leading to the final report release in June 2016. The Jefferson Institute will manage production of the publication.
