ILWA Update 7/1/2020
Indian Lake Closed on Thursday, July 23rd for Treatment

Press release from the City of Worcester is below:

The City of Worcester Department of Public Works & Parks has contracted for the application of copper sulfate to Indian Lake and Coes Reservoir on Thursday, July 23, 2020. We advise all persons to stay out of the water, discontinue boat use and fishing and keep their pets out of the water on this day. Beaches will be posted prior to the application. It is planned to reopen the lakes the following day.

Copper sulfate is a safe and effective way to control the growth of harmful, toxin-producing algae. The application of copper sulfate is a common practice to maintain a healthy lake and poses minimal risk to humans and animals after application is complete. The application is coordinated with the Indian Lake and Tatnuck Brook Watershed Associations and has been approved by the Worcester Conservation Commission.
Increased Neighborhood Concerns Over Safety/Noise

Neighbors have expressed their concerns with safety and noise on the lake and the public spaces surrounding it repeatedly over the past 6 weeks. We especially appreciate the neighbors who have engaged in the Neighborhood Watch meetings, the efforts the Worcester Police have made to increase patrols and the Worcester Department of Public Works and Parks' effort to enforce parking rules at Morgan Park.

Yet we understand it's just not enough.

We will continue to reach out to law enforcement, city and state officials. We need you to do the same if you share these concerns.

It is a joy to see people visiting our beautiful lake, parks and beaches. However, safety and quality of life must be paramount for all involved.

If you see dangerous activity at the parks or on the lake, please reach out to the appropriate department so that they can respond accordingly:

Parks and beaches, please contact:  Worcester Police Department ...  Emergency 911;  Non Emergency 508-799-8606

On the water, contact:  Massachusetts Environmental Police  Dispatch 800-632-8075

The Worcester Police Department has a dedicated line to report fireworks. You can r eport an anonymous tip by calling (508) 799-1003 or text to 274637.
Bacteria Issues Prompt Call for Action

After two beach closures at the Shore Park beach due to high bacteria counts within the first week that it was scheduled to be open for the summer, the ILWA has called on city officials to look further into the situation including:
  • Improved communication of closures due to bacteria so that all parties, including our association, are able to get the word out as soon as a high result is received.
  • A thorough analyses of the cause and a plan to address.
  • Bacteria testing daily from May through September at the beaches and all inlets to Indian Lake; this data be analyzed to pinpoint any potential bacteria issues lakewide.
While bacteria closures are not uncommon after heavy rains, they have been a rare occurrence at Indian Lake until recently.
