CoBank: Supply chains arguably in most dire condition
The U.S. economy is on a strong growth path and cash-rich consumers are spending robustly on both services and goods. Roughly 80% of the U.S. adult population has now received at least one vaccination shot, leading to renewed participation in many public activities. But while the U.S. economy is running hot, it is still very much in the grips of the pandemic. Its negative influence, however, has steadily shifted from curtailing demand to derailing supply chains.

Join us for the final ADSA 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting Symposium
Please join us on October 19, 2021, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. (EDT), for the final webinar in the ADSA 2021 Annual Meeting Webinar Series, a Forages and Pastures Symposium.
Forage quality makes up the majority of the diet for most dairy animals. In fact, a trend over the past 20 years of using more highly digestible forage hybrids has resulted in greater adoption of higher-forage diets without sacrificing productivity. Often, it is a challenge to make the leap from seeing responses in a research setting to finding similar observations in field settings, where the environment is not controlled. The objective of this symposium is to present the responses of forage quality in a controlled setting, to determine the predictability of how controlled research corresponds with field responses, and to investigate how to connect the two areas.
This is the final webinar of six for the ADSA 2021 Annual Meeting Webinar Series. If you registered for the 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting, you already have access to all six; check your email or ask ADSA for a promotional code that was emailed separately. If you were unable to attend the Virtual Annual Meeting, it's not too late!
Registration for the webinar series is open now, so make plans today to join us next week!

Vitamin D supplement may enhance dairy cows’ immune health
New research in the Journal of Dairy Science® explores possible genetic effects of dietary supplementation with vitamin D to support cows’ immune function
Known as a crucial component in the body’s ability to absorb and retain calcium, essential to processes such as the development and maintenance of healthy bones,
vitamin D has also been found to play important roles in immune defense. A new study in the October issue of the Journal of Dairy Science® explores the effects of different sources and amounts of vitamin D in dairy cows, revealing promising possibilities for improvements to health and welfare.
This study by scientists from the University of Florida, Gainesville (USA), focused on pregnant dairy cows, as pregnancy and lactation increase calcium demands, which might affect calcium reserves of the dam, and such dynamic changes occur when cows are most vulnerable to disease. Thus, it is not surprising that vitamin D could be especially important at this time. “Vitamin D status might contribute to the ability of the immune response to confer resistance to bacterial infections,” states senior author José Eduardo P. Santos, PhD. (MORE)

ADSA Urges Prioritizing Ag Research
in “Build Back Better” package
ADSA recently joined over 130 other science focused groups in a coalition letter to majority leaders in Congress urging them to prioritize and protect the vital investments in agricultural climate research, agricultural innovation, and agricultural research infrastructure in the Build Back Better human and climate infrastructure package. The letter noted: “Our agriculture and food system is highly vulnerable to climate change. From multi-year droughts, heat and forest fires to hurricanes and flooding, our farmers, ranchers, and foresters need innovative and powerful tools to weather the storms that are now arriving with greater force and frequency. R&D investments also impact American’s access to a sustainable, equitable and healthy food supply”
It urged them to “.prioritize and protect the vital investments in agricultural climate research, agricultural innovation, and agricultural research infrastructure. The $7.75 billion agricultural research investment, or just 0.2% of the proposed original total reconciliation package, underlies the tools necessary to build climate resilience and food security for all Americans”.
