Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland
July 2021
| |
The celebration of our nation’s independence on the fourth of July has become a day when we gather outside for picnics and barbecues with friends and family. Thankfully, this year we can do a little more of that. We all need to connect again so let’s do it! This year fireworks are a little scary as we sit in dry California so do be careful. Here are places where you can watch fireworks in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Our experience of work has been revamped since the pandemic. Telemedicine has continued and many important changes are coming for telephone visits. Digital access is a health equity issue so let’s keep connected to our patients in whatever way we can.

Our clinical work still requires PPE, so mask up as you approach any clinical building. You also may note that we are transitioning to a new screening app. If your badge does not scan easily just enter your UCSF email address. New badge readers are coming soon to BCH Oakland.
Thanks to all who completed the 2021 Physician and Provider Work Experience Survey. Results should be out soon. We know from other benchmarks we have been more engaged since the pandemic as many have stepped up to the crises but also a bit burnt out. Do take some time for yourselves this summer season to fill your personal tank back up.
Clinical researchers please note the opportunity below to be a BCH OAKLAND CTSI liaison. We welcome a wide applicant pool.
Welcome to all the new learners on campus! We have a new academic year starting off with new fellows and residents, as well as a host of medical students.
Welcome to the new faculty and especially to those of you who joined from PMMG (Hospital Medicine, Center for Child Protection, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and Primary Care/Teen physicians). Take note of Faculty Development Day in the announcements below on September 14, 2021. More info to come.
We also celebrate the retirements of several important faculty members this month: Dr. Daniel Birnbaum, Professor of Neurology and Division Chief, Pediatric Neurology, Dr. Eric Padua, Professor of Radiology, and Dr. Mary Rutherford, Medical Director of Quality and Safety at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland. Thank you all for decades of service to our organization and the patients we serve. Please see the announcements from Dr. Chaconas for these celebrations.

Travel Awards for Child, Elder or Dependent Care
Dear Colleagues,
To support School of Medicine faculty members who have child, elder, or dependent care responsibilities, the School of Medicine’s Academic Affairs Office provides funding through Travel Awards for Child, Elder, or Dependent Care.
The intent of these funds is to promote a family-friendly environment so that the expenses associated with childcare, elder care, or dependent care are not an impediment to faculty members’ participation in professional conferences.
As circumstances around the COVID-19 pandemic continue to evolve, UCSF will update its travel guidance in accordance with the latest public health orders. This guidance (last updated on May 13, 2021), is effective until further notice.
Please click here for application instructions.
We look forward to receiving your application!

DIVERSITY, EQUITY and INCLUSION at UCSF BCH
From Marsha J. Treadwell, PhD
DEI Co-Chair BCH Oakland
Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, UCSF School of Medicine
Jordan Fund Endowed Chair, Department of Hematology/Oncology
| |
The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo at henry.ocampo@ucsf.edu, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.
