Paint colors can be referred to as a warm or cool color… any color. For example, I am often asked "Is this a warm red or a cool red?" And why is this important?
Whether you are painting a realistic or an abstract work, when painting the illusion of depth, we've been taught "cool colors recede and generally, warm colors come closer.
This BobBlast shows two painting samples on Cheap Joe's Kilimanjaro watercolor paper - Holbein's Pyrrole Red Light (WARM) and Compose Blue #2 (COOL).
Then, I paint a smaller sample of the same colors and lay them on top to see the effect. Try different colors to see the illusion of depth. Notice how the warm colors come forward and the cool colors recede. This is a simple, but effective lesson to include in your work.
