Sunapee Happenings
“Spring unlocks the flowers to paint a laughing tree”
Spring is here, which in New Hampshire means mud and temps still down in the 30’s and 40’s... as every year, a growing relief which is welcome almost beyond words. Birds are warbling their ‘good morning’ songs at daybreak. Woodland critters are venturing out and about... hungry Black Bears, some with cubs, are emerging from their winter dens... time to tuck away the bird feeders.   Flocks of turkeys are in the fields, the Toms in full fan & feather to attract a mate.  Sighted on a local pond … a pair of Mallards, a quartette of Mergansers and from across the border, a pair of Canada Geese. The world is waking up from a long winter’s nap. Even forecasts of April showers cannot dampen our hopeful spirits today.

The Farthest Star Sheds New Light on the Early Universe

A cosmic fluke helped NASA’s Hubble space telescope spy “Earendel”, a giant star at the edge of the known universe that could tell us more about what happened after the Big Bang!

From the Big Bang to Bunnies!

As spring arrives in New Hampshire, it’s a good time to be on the lookout for rabbits. And if you see one, you could become part of a statewide effort to gather data on how many rabbits are in New Hampshire, and where they live.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and UNH’s Cooperative Extension’s rabbit reporting program continues this spring, and citizen scientists who spot a rabbit can report their findings here.
Spemki Nib8iwi: The Heavens in the Nighttime

This free program is in collaboration with the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center and will feature an Indigenous focus to star gazing. We encourage participants to dress for the weather and to bring their own chairs. We will provide hot beverages and the museum bathrooms will be open. In the event the weather is bad or it is too cloudy, the event will be rescheduled for April 23rd.

Sunapee Short Term Rental Alliance

The town of Sunapee was built on the tourist industry and tourism continues to be part of our town’s culture. Visitors who stay for several days or weeks often utilize a short-term stay platform to rent houses or single units; at last count there are about 100 short-term stay rentals available in Sunapee!

Chief Cahill notes, “The Sunapee police recognizes and supports the vacation homes and short-term rentals in our community. The police would like to encourage all rental owners and visitors to learn and follow all ordinances and rules with our town. This will help us support our mission statement and
ensure respect for friends, neighbors and residents through the beautiful busy season we all enjoy!”

The impact of so many short-term rentals (STRs) in our little town is multi-layered. Sunapee Short Term Rental Alliance (SSTRA) was formed in 2021 by Sunapee community members. The SSTRA is currently working with town officials, STR operators, and other interested parties to educate and support STR businesses while ensuring protections for the Sunapee community and resources.

World Health Day
Today, April 7th, the ‘World Health Organization celebrates “World Health Day”... and, in an ironic confluence of events,  it’s also "National Beer Day” in the US.
Until Next Week
In New Hampshire, every month is Earth Month, but this time of the year we pay extra attention to the ways nature inspires us and ways we can share our love of nature.  Take good care and enjoy the season, be it sunshine, snowflakes or showers. Remember, those showers bring the promise of May flowers!
