Ripe Now! Tomatoes

Tomato, is it a fruit or a vegetable? An argument as old as time. Although we do use tomatoes as a vegetable in a culinary sense, they are indeed a type of fruit. Tomatoes come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. In fact, there are about 1,000 varieties of tomatoes in cultivation. You can find a plethora of different types of tomatoes at the farmers' market, ranging from early girl, sungolds, and heirloom varieties, just to name a few. There is nothing quite like a freshly picked tomato straight from the farm. Come to our markets and bask in the glory of peak tomato season. Stop by Riverdog Farm, Happy Boy Farms, Oya Organics, Dirty Girl Produce, Full Belly Farm, Avalos Farm, Kaki Farm, Lou Vue, Lucero Organic Farms, Golden Rule Organics, Green Thumb Organics, and Vang Family Farm to find your new favorite tomatoes!

Easy Eating:
There are so many ways to indulge in the deliciousness of tomatoes. Try a new take on a cobbler with this savory summer tomato cobbler with blue cheese biscuits. You can jam all types of fruit, so why not tomatoes?! Try out this awesome tomato jam recipe. If you haven't tried fried green tomatoes before, you are truly missing out. This fried green tomatoes recipe is an awesome side dish. Tomatoes are actually better for you cooked rather than raw because they release beneficial chemicals in the cooking process, so get all the nutrition you can with this tomato and zucchini galette

Storage tips: Tomatoes continue to ripen after they are picked, so the right storage is important for optimal flavor. For ripe tomatoes, keep them on the counter at room temperature and away from sunlight. Keep an eye on them to make sure they don't overripen! If they are overripe, keep them in the fridge to make them last longer.

Zero Waste: Tomatoes ripening quicker than you can eat them? Or did you buy discounted seconds from the market? Try out this tomato sauce recipe and make a big pot of pasta or freeze for later!

Recipe: Classic Gazpacho

Berkeley Farmers' Market customer Isabel Rodriguez-Vega's Spanish Grandmother's recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:
1 1/2 pounds tomatoes (the juicier the better!), cut into quarters
2 sweet peppers, stemmed, seeded, and cut into quarters
1 small cucumber, cut into quarters
1/2 small to medium onion, cut into quarters
1/3 cup red or white vinegar
extra-virgin olive oil
2 garlic cloves
salt and pepper
1 hard boiled egg

1. Cut all your veggies into pieces small enough to fit in your blender. Start hard boiling your egg while you cut your veggies.
2. Blend all the ingredients together in a blender until very well blended. Strain your soup through a mesh sieve for a smoother texture. Refrigerate at least 2 hours, or until chilled. The longer you let it sit the better the flavors will be!

*Serve with a splash of balsamic vinegar, piel de sapo melon, bread, and/or Spanish tortilla

Please check our website, social media, and/or email newsletter for any updates regarding this.

Staying Safe
When shopping at the market during times of poor air quality, take precautions to keep yourself safe. Check out the air quality near you. If you have a sensitive medical condition, consider staying indoors to stay healthy. Limit your time outside and wear an N95 mask, if you have one (must be worn with cloth covering over the valve) or a KN95 mask. As per City of Berkeley COVID-19 safety guidelines, please do not wear masks with one-way valves unless covered as they do not protect transmission of COVID-19.
