CEO MESSAGE
This week I am delighted to announce the 31 companies that will be presenting at our first annual Invest in BC presented by Lumira Ventures. This virtual summit gives our investor-ready companies, all seeking future strategic partners, access to a global audience of over 100 investors and government representatives from 31 countries. During the two-day event, entrepreneurs will be able to tell their stories and solicit feedback from a wide range of investor stakeholders. I wish them all success.

I am also very excited to welcome a ‘new’ member this week. As many of you have noticed, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and the BC Academic Health Science Network announced this Wednesday that they have joined forces to create a new organization, Michael Smith Health Research BC. We look forward to continuing and enhancing collaboration between our organizations as we work to advance life sciences research and innovation.
In my inbox this week, the Research Universities Council of BC newsletter considers the role of universities and the Provincial economy. They note that among the G7, Canada is the only country with a declining rate of investment in R&D as a percentage of GDP. The outcome could be dire.

For BC to continue to attract foreign investment, and for our BC startups to remain local while scaling up to become global anchor companies, they will increasingly need ever more skilled, high-level talent as well as investment capital and exceptional leaders. In the new economy, people don’t just go to where companies are—companies go to where talent is.” Quote retrieved from the Research Universities' Council of BC Newsletter, issued October 8th, 2021.

Another LSBC member, BioTalent Canada is also sounding the alarm; Canada’s bio-economy is facing a labour shortage. In a press release for the newly published Labour Market Indicator study, BioTalent Canada notes that, “…national data and analysis suggests the growing bio-economy sector will need as many as 65,000 additional workers by 2029 to meet demand, and current forecasts show the talent pipeline to be three-quarters empty.”

It seems even more appropriate to congratulate our academic partners on their achievements in the Maclean’s University Rankings this year and recognize their role in preparing the life science innovators of tomorrow. Our Showcase Series supporters, University of Victoria and University of Northern BC gained joint top comprehensive university (alongside Simon Fraser University) and top primarily undergraduate institution respectively. The University of British Columbia ranked number 2 overall.

Congratulations also to LSBC member, Canary Medical’s CEO, Bill Hunter, who has been listed as one of Goldman Sachs 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs for 2021.

Next week, on Friday, October 22, I will be taking part in the 21st Annual Healthcare Summit, speaking alongside LSBC Board Director, David Helliwell of Thrive Health on the Consumer Engaged Healthcare panel.

Don’t forget to join us at next week’s webinar, sponsored by Gowling WLG, on protecting IP during drug development - tickets are still available.
