SOCIAL ACTION

Courageous Love Awards - Sunday, January 29, 2023

The Courageous Love Award is for individuals or organizations that have exhibited courageous love and touched hearts. Presenting a Courageous Love Award is our opportunity to reach beyond our core social justice folks, and to engage our whole congregation or community in social justice work. It is also a chance to uplift others; strengthen and support partnerships we are already developing; and to join together with joy and purpose, those who have shared values.

Please join us as we present Courageous Love Awards to our very own Ted Foster and to San Diegans For Gun Violence Prevention (SD4GVP).

Ted has been a tireless proponent of hands on and results-oriented projects and has led very successful campaigns for our UUFSD Climate Action and UU the Vote Program.

SD4GVP is a coalition of concerned citizens united to end gun violence in America through advocacy and education. The UUFSD is proud to be a coalition member and honored to have co-sponsored events with SD4GVP.

2nd Monday Book Club

February 13, 6:30-8:15pm, Founders Hall West

On February 13th, at 6:30pm here at UUFSD, we will be discussing the non-fiction: A Bigger Picture: My Fight to Bring a New African Voice to the Climate Crisis (2021) by Vanessa Nakate. "...a long-awaited addition to recent books by young climate activists. Nakate is a Ugandan activist in her early 20s who writes in a compelling voice about her youth climate activism, the national and international barriers she has faced, and the importance of inclusive movements for climate and environmental justice". Mardi Gras / Fat Tuesday

February 21, 6:00 – 8:30pm, Founders Hall & Core Area

Mardi Gras is also known as Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day. The name Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday.” It comes from the fact that the festival takes place on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. It also refers to the custom of consuming all the fats in the home before Lent. Lent is a time of abstaining from meat and fats during the week until Easter. So, it is a huge party to consume all the foods in the house. I do not give up anything for Lent, but I do give out lots of Hugs!

There will be good music to listen and dance to, masks, beads to take home, and great food in a festive atmosphere provided by colorful lights and decorations. We will be serving all you can eat pancakes, jambalaya, shrimp creole, hurricanes, and beignets. Beignets are a smaller version of a donut. The inside of beignets is a little puffier with a soft middle. They are so delicious! All ages come for fun and fellowship, and of course, great food!

No donations required.

Scripps Institute of Oceanography Lab Tour

Saturday, February 25, 10:00 - 11:00am

Tour the ice lab at Scripps Institution of Oceanography with our own Jeff Severinghaus. Learn the latest on his study of ancient ice as it relates to climate change. This is always fascinating and sometimes relieving as Jeff often has some good news on progress towards decarbonization and other advances towards a more sustainable future. This event was part of our last auction.

Hosts Needed for Circle Dinners

Saturday, February 25 and March 28

The next two potluck circle dinners are scheduled for February 25 and March 28. We are looking for additional hosts for both dates. We need about 5 hosts per evening to handle most of the people who typically sign up. Hosting is easy... you provide a place and one dish, and the guests provide the rest of the dinner and great company!

We are also looking for one or two people to assist by staffing the sign-up table in the Core area after Services on occasion.

Sign ups to participate in the dinners will begin as soon as we have hosts lined up!

Come See Our New Kitchen Equipment!

Did you know that our kitchen has new equipment and that it can be used and enjoyed by anyone in the Fellowship? Our kitchen, Core area and Founders Hall are available for all types of events like birthdays, anniversaries, memorials, weddings, Circle Dinners, etc. So, don’t fret if your house is too small, or you don’t want to clean or decorate your house. Our kitchen and surrounding spaces can accommodate your food preparation and celebration needs. All you need to bring is the food and love.

Contact Louis Garrett at lovenlou@gmail.com for more information about the kitchen.

Hospitality at UUFSD

It takes a fun personality to make Hospitality Happen at UUFSD. If you attend UUFSD regularly, we hope you will be involved on one of our Hospitality Teams: Kitchen Committee/Coffee Hour and Fun and Fellowship Committee. Volunteering your time only twice a year is your contribution to the communal event of our shared worship.

Click here for more information on the committees. Click here to sign up with SignUpGenius. Contact Louis Garrett at lovenlou@gmail.com with any questions.

The January 2023 edition of the UUFSD quarterly magazine “Dialogue” is available on line

(https://uufsd.org/news/publications/quarterly-magazine/) and in hard copy in the core area. In this issue we continue to explore our collective “Journey To Our Deepest Selves.” We also look back at the many Social Justice actions we undertook and the fantastic social events we participated in over the last three months. We joyously welcomed our new Music Director, Steve Milloy. And with sadness we had a “Celebration of Life” for our dear member Charlie Khoury.

We are following up on a recommendation made by several respondents of our Communications survey and have added a new feature to the magazine, “Goings on at UUFSD.” This includes all the ongoing and special events at the Fellowship for the next three months.

Be A Candle of Care

Pastoral Care is a core component of our beloved community as it strengthens the meaning and experience of community. Every caring action is a compassionate action. We can all participate in caring for our community through a variety of compassionate actions. Here are some ways you can be a “Candle of Care”:

Offering to bring food to someone in need

Send a “caring card”

Visit someone who is experiencing a challenging time

Make a phone call to express your care

Offer transportation to Sunday services or for essential appointments (e.g. medical)

Give a hug (when appropriate)

If you would like to participate in UUFSD’s Candle of Care program please contact pastoralcare@uufsd.org
