A Solution to Homelessness in Your Town

Newly Revised, Updated, and Improved 2nd Printing Now Available!

midstate_Sep122019_0271-Edit.jpeg

Homelessness is a disaster in American communities. In 2021, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development found that 600,000 people were homeless, other official estimates figure that there are millions. These folks are in dire straits, forced to live on the streets, under freeway bridges, in the woods, in their cars, anywhere they can find a place to sleep. Communities need to come together to solve

this inhumane crisis. The problem is complex, but

the solution starts with housing. Once a person has

a safe home, with help from the community, they

can start rebuilding their lives.

IMG_0207.jpeg

The book, A Solution to Homelessness in Your Town, describes the way the smaller town of American Canyon, in Napa Valley California, built housing for their homeless citizens. “This project was accepted by all of the neighbors because of the process and the product,” said Brent Cooper, head of American Canyon Community Development. Even in this town of 21,000 people, 480 applications were turned in on the first day applications were offered for the 70 450 S.F.

cottages that were built. The need for building

more housing for the houseless is enormous. But

this book shows how it can be done if citizens and

government come together to build it.

You can buy the book from oroeditions.com for 30% off using code "solution" till the end of October or donate on our Facebook fundraiser page and we will get these books in the hands of the activists and politicians around the country to solve this critical problem. Thank you very much for your support.

News from Haystack Heights Cohousing, Spokane, WA

This is a wonderful text to wake up to.

"Hey Chuck! We are all moved in and it’s amazing. We love the space, the light and the walkways and porches make it feel like New Orleans. Kids are running around already in the common areas, people are borrowing things from each other, folks who haven’t moved yet are helping people move and bringing them food. It’s great!"—Jim Dawson

Auburn Cohousing, Placer County, CA

Once upon a time other cohousing groups relied on friends and neighbors to help get their project built. Now the Auburn, California group needs your help. If you know anyone motivated to move to a very cool, affordable community, a village really, in Auburn, well they need more sign-ups for the Getting-It-Built Workshop. Please forward this information to anyone you might know. Thanks!

This project as highlighted in our new book, Community-Enhanced Design is where a county is donating a 4.6 acre site to this site. That will help it be more affordable. When our first book came out in 1988 the National Danish government bought 200 copies and distributed them to local governments. Now, about a quarter of the new projects in Denmark are catalyzed with county sites. This is a breakthrough project in that regard. Please help make it successful.

CohousingUS—Adding Affordabilities-case studies in affordable cohousing

October 23, 2021 1:15 PM – 2:15 PM PST

One of the most common values and biggest challenges for cohousing is to be affordable to all. This event will dig into this difficult topic from many perspectives, from development options to HOA dues and the ways to help each other. Join us on the 23rd of October.

For this session, cohousing Architect Charles Durrett, will dive into several of his past projects including those in Vancouver, Eugene, Anchorage and some of the 18 others outlined in detail in his new book, Community-Enhanced Design: Cohousing and Other High-Functioning Neighborhoods. Creating a viable and affordable cohousing neighborhood encompasses many factors such as education and awareness, development and process, finance and legal to affordable materials, constructability and sustainable energy. Charles will be pulling the key information from these case studies to summarize the ways in which designing a neighborhood

can be a clear and predictable process.

Rare Opportunity to Purchase 4-Bedroom in Nevada City Cohousing

611 Redbud Way, Nevada City, CA

CoHousingNC-224.jpeg
CoHousingNC-41 _1_.jpg

Hello Cohousing Community,

There is a beautiful 4-bedroom home that has just come up for sale in the Nevada City Cohousing community. If you aren't familiar with this community, it is quite a special one. Not only does Chuck live there and with his team were the architect for this house, but there is a harmonious mix of families, kids of different ages, singles, and elders who live there. There's even a swimming pool and a hot tub, as well as lush flower and vegetable gardens, fruit trees galore, and a seasonal creek labyrinth. If you have children, you've hit the jackpot. With 10 acres to explore, a playground, kids playroom, teen room, and a music room, this is a kid's paradise.

Most importantly we have a 4,000 SF common house that is used often including a dinner programmed six times per week and really is a successful extension to our houses. Together with your house of 1,693 SF and the 4,000 SF common house, it really is a 5,693 SF house. Most of all you're buying a high-functioning community, and they throw the house in for free. We strive to be a high-functioning cohousing as outlined in Community-Enhanced Design: Cohousing and Other High-Functioning Neighborhoods. So if a real cohousing community appeals to you, this is the place.
