Weigh in on Proposed Zoning Amendment for Multi-Family Zoning on December 21

After a recent housing workshop, the Planning Board is continuing to work towards a zoning amendment proposal to permit multi-family housing.


The Planning Board is holding public work sessions on this topic at their regularly scheduled meetings, and public participation is welcome and encouraged. 


There have been a few public input sessions at Planning Board meetings, and the next ones are on December 21 and January 4 via Zoom.

The Board is working towards bringing forward a zoning amendment for Annual Town Meeting 2023.

Options for Saving Money and Energy for Income-Eligible Residents

Energy costs are rising, making it more difficult for many to cover their energy expenses. There are several ways to save money and energy, especially for income-eligible residents:


  • Fuel assistance
  • Reduced electricity and gas rates through Eversource and National Grid
  • Community Choice energy aggregation
  • Community solar

Volunteers Sought for Seats on the Historic Districts Commission, Deadline December 23

The Select Board is looking to fill two open positions on the Historic Districts Commission (HDC)—one full member, and one associate member.


The HDC reviews and approves all plans within Lexington’s historic districts for construction, demolition, exterior renovations, color changes, and signs. Interested applicants should have a sense of dedication to historical heritage and preservation, and to the special townscape of Lexington and the concept of architectural compatibility.


The Select Board seeks members with ability/experience in one or more of the following:


  • Legal training/experience
  • Historical training/experience
  • Maintaining a wide view of the impact of architecture and preservation – HDC decisions have an impact both immediately, as well as many decades into the future.
  • Training and/or experience in graphic design
  • Membership in the local business community


The deadline to apply is December 23.

Winter Parking Ban in Effect through April 1

Between December 1 and April 1, the Police Department strictly enforces the "All Night Parking Ban" between 2:00-6:00AM.

 

Strict enforcement is necessary for efficient snow removal throughout the winter months, even if road conditions and weather forecasts are favorable.

 

During these times, the following is prohibited:



  • Parking on any street or way
  • Parking within 5 feet of the edge of any street or way
  • Parking in any municipal off-street parking area for longer than 1 hour

 

Violations are subject to a $20 fine, and violators may be towed at the expense of the registered owner.

Friends of the Council on Aging Celebrates 50th Anniversary

The Lexington Friends of the Council on Aging (FCOA) is celebrating 50 years of supporting programming and enrichment of senior residents.


The FCOA was founded in 1972 to support programs, services, and capital projects to serve the senior residents of Lexington. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the FCOA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit funded by the generous donations of Lexington citizens. The FCOA supports critical services such as transportation (Lexpress and LexConnect), the senior lunch program, and enrichment programs such as OWLL educational classes and the Lexington Lifetimes Journal. The FCOA also funded furnishings for the new Community Center. 


Marking its 50th anniversary, the FCOA hopes to raise awareness of their accomplishments to the broader community.

Massachusetts' First Professional Female Firefighter Honored at Lexington Fire Headquarters

The Lexington Fire Department recently added a new plaque recognizing former Lexington firefighter Ann Pastreich, Massachusetts' first professional female firefighter.


The plaque reads:


"Pastreich, 37 years old, a Cambridge resident and mother of two, graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy on September 7, 1980 the only woman ever to complete its rigorous eight-week program. Reported to Lexington Fire Headquarters on November 9, 1980. In the 40 years since Ann was hired, over 250 women have followed her path into the fire service in Massachusetts."


The plaque goes on to recognize the 9 female firefighters who have served our community over the years:

MBTA Winter 2023 Service Changes

This winter, the MBTA is continuing to improve service across the system to support riders across the region. These modifications result in slight changes to routes serving Lexington, including routes 62, 76, and 78.


They are implementing service changes to provide the following benefits to riders:


  • Sufficient service for returning riders
  • Support for new travel patterns and behaviors

 

These minor changes will go into effect on Sunday, December 18, 2022.

COVID-19 Data; Test Kits Available at Town Buildings

The Lexington Office of Public Health will update weekly COVID-19 case numbers each Friday. The data represented on the dashboard DOES NOT include at-home test results. The data only represents results of PCR and antigen tests verified through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Test Kits Available

Free at-home rapid COVID-19 test kits are available at Town buildings across Lexington.


You can pick up a test at the following locations:


  • Town Office Building (Health Office) - 1625 Massachusetts Avenue
  • Fire Department - 45 Bedford Street
  • Police Department - 173 Bedford Street
  • Community Center - 39 Marrett Road
  • Visitors Center - 1875 Massachusetts Avenue
  • Public Services Building - 201 Bedford Street


Test kits are available during regular business hours (Police Dept. open 24/7) while supplies last.
