WKU increasing access & opportunity through scholarship program evolution
Western Kentucky University continues to make the WKU Experience accessible and affordable with three additional changes to its freshman scholarship program for fall 2021.

The WKU Family Scholarship provides in-state tuition to first-time, full-time freshmen whose parents or grandparents are WKU graduates no matter where they live. In the past, those students were eligible for the Tuition Incentive Program and the new program will further reduce the cost of tuition by about 22 percent.

The WKU Border State Scholarship provides in-state tuition to first-time, full-time freshmen from the seven states that border Kentucky: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. WKU currently has almost 3,000 students from those states, an increase of 22 percent over the past seven years.

WKU has also retooled its Tuition Incentive Program, which will reduce out-of-state tuition by nearly half for non-resident first-time, full-time freshmen with a 3.0 high school GPA or who qualify for any other scholarship award.
WKU announces partnership with FreeWill
The mission of WKU has always been to provide research, service and lifelong learning opportunities for our students, alumni and community. Whether a Hilltopper walked our campus a few short years ago or has been an advocate for WKU for decades, the University has always strived to support members of the WKU Family today and in the future.

In that spirit, WKU has partnered with FreeWill—a social venture featured in Forbes, The New York Times and Oprah’s 31 Best Ways to Make a Difference—to provide a new resource to our community: a free tool to write a legal will. FreeWill has empowered more than 160,000 Americans to plan for their futures and protect the things they love by removing the expensive legal fees often associated with the process.
Check WKU's Healthy on the Hill website for COVID-19 information, including FAQs, Reported Cases Dashboard, Symptoms & Health Checks and more.

Hospitality Management student celebrates heritage & community
Ana Sofia Diaz was 15 years old when she and her family moved to the United States from Guatemala, leaving behind her friends, school, church and community for a new life in an entirely new place. The language barrier wasn’t the only challenge that Diaz faced when she settled in to her new home. As the eldest of four children, she herself struggled adapting to the new culture. “I miss the sense of community the most. Everyone that I’ve met [in the U.S.] has been kind, but there is nothing like the Latin American culture; they always make you feel like you are part of their family, even if you’re only a friend. You always feel at home wherever you go,” said Diaz.

Hispanic Heritage Month "means a celebration to my beautiful culture, to the achievements of my people, and to the strength and influence we represent. I am proud to be Latina and to share this heritage with everyone.” -- Amelia Ampuero Gonzales, a WKU senior from Lima, Peru
Student panel to discuss 'My WKU Experience' on Oct. 2
CITL, ISEC and Mahurin Honors College Scholars of Color invite the campus community to attend a moderated student panel titled My WKU Experience: Addressing Race in the Classroom on Oct. 2.

This event will consist of two parts. The first part consists of three taped interview segments that capture the perspective of several WKU students of color in our classrooms. These videos will serve as the basis for the event’s second part: a moderated follow-up discussion with the students featured in the video recordings.

Registration for this session will close the morning of the event; a Zoom link will be sent to those who register. Please view the student interviews prior to the session and submit any questions for the panel prior to the event to cierra.waller@wku.edu
Affordable Textbook Initiative saves thousands for students
WKU Libraries partnered with campus faculty to offer the Affordable Textbook Initiative (ATI), which brought an estimated $69,803 in cost savings to WKU students for Fall 2020. Made possible by the generous support from a WKU Sisterhood grant, the goal of the initiative is to make course materials available at no or low cost to WKU students by incentivizing faculty adoption of library-licensed or Open Educational Resources in place of traditional textbooks.
Stormwater expert to present WKU lecture on Oct. 8

View from the Hill
Since having our temperature taken is very much a part of our lives these days, it’s more important than ever to find efficient and accurate ways to do that.
