State of Arkansas

Arkansas hit another grim milestone today, passing 600 reported deaths due to COVID-19 in the state.

Today, four more deaths were reported by the governor, bringing the state's total to 603.

It took Arkansas 68 days to reach its first 100 deaths after the first case was detected on March 11. It took 31 days, May 18-June 18, to reach the next 100 deaths. After that, Arkansas reached 300 deaths on July 7, 19 days later. It took another 19 days to reach 400 and 10 more days for the state to go from 400 to 500 deaths from COVID-19.

It took 12 days to go from 500 deaths to 600, reflecting a slight slowdown from the last 100 deaths.

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced that 412 more cases of COVID-19 were reported to the state today. Twelve of those cases were in correctional facilities and 400 in the community. This follows a weekend where there were 851 cases on Saturday and 673 cases on Sunday.

Today's positive tests bring the number of cumulative cases in the state to 53,777. Of those cases, 6,341 are considered active with 38 in nursing homes, 994 in correctional facilities and 5,309 in the community.

Hospitalizations increased by eight since yesterday, bringing the total currently hospitalized to 486. Of those hospitalized, 120 are on ventilators.

Secretary of Health Jose Romero said that transmission appears to be largely due to communal and familial gatherings. He urged caution and mask-wearing for those deciding to take part in those activities.
