Arrival and Dismissal Procedure Reminders
Walkers – WE WILL BEGIN TOMORROW 8/24
With safety in mind, students should walk to school from south of Poplar Pike only. There is not a safe route down Poplar Pike or across the railroad tracks at this time. Do not drop students off on Forest Hill Irene Road.  Now that Forest Hill Irene construction is complete, we will begin to allow students to walk and/or ride bikes. Students will cross at the crosswalk at Forest Hill and Fern Brook. They will follow the sidewalk in front of the school and along the driveway towards the flagpole and Main Office.  Students on the east side of Forest Hill Irene will cross the south driveway, at the crossing guard’s direction, and follow the sidewalk toward the flag pole and main office.  Bikes must be walked at all times while on campus. Walkers will enter and exit at the stairwell doors by the Main Office.  Bike riders will enter by the gym after placing their bikes on the rack.

Arrival
Cars dropping off should only use the south entrance (farthest from Poplar Pike). Cars will pull all the way around the outermost lane and back in front of the doors by the gym.  Staff will begin calling for students to exit cars about 8:20. Students will enter the gym and find a spot marked on the floor to sit on until they are instructed to exit the gym to go to class.  Preschool and bus arrival will take place in the bus loop closest to Forest Hill Irene.

Dismissal
Please hang your car tag from the mirror, and make it visible from the front of the car.  The car line will form at the doors nearest the gym. Please pull all the way forward so that we can fit as many cars as possible in the car lanes. Once the lane closest to the building fills up, please fill the lane closest to the parking lot. We will continue to use both lanes all the way around the outside of the parking lot. A staff member will be present to guide cars. Preschool and bus dismissal will take place in the bus loop closest to Forest Hill Irene.

August Teacher Treats
We were very excited to deliver the August Teacher Treat! What's a Teacher Treat you ask? The PTO plans a special “Teacher Treat” for our amazing FHES faculty and staff to show them our heartfelt appreciation for all they do.

This month, we stocked the teachers' lounges with K-Cups for coffee, paper products, plastic ware, dish soap, scrubbers, nice hand soap and lotion. We were also very proud to be able to purchase a microwave for our teachers for their upstairs lounge!

Germantown Board of Mayor and Alderman Meeting Legislative Update
At their last meeting, the Germantown Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BMA) voted on the second reading to approve the budget for FY2021. In the FY2020 budget, $5 million was allocated and approved for an expansion of Houston Middle School. Construction of a secure entrance was included in this project, as Houston Middle is the last school remaining in the district without a secure entrance. The city administration cut this funding the last few months. There is no money budgeted for the Houston Middle expansion in FY2021. This has been moved to FY2022 and the funding has been cut from $5 million to $2.5 million from the city.

Included in the FY2021 budget is $10,000 of earnest money and $40,000 for due diligence on the purchase of land in Crestwyn Hills for the development of a soccer (long fields complex). The estimated cost of acquisition of the land is $2.5 million and targeted for FY2022.

Additionally, the city is no longer funding the approximately $350,000 annual settlement to Shelby County, that was a condition of forming our school system. While this was an obligation owed by GMSD, the city had funded this since the inception of the district.

The final reading of the budget will be tomorrow at the August 24th meeting of the BMA.
Treasures for Teachers Campaign through Germantown Education Foundation
As teachers work to plan and supply their classrooms for the new school year, the Germantown Education Foundation would love to take on the sometimes financial burden of supplying an entire classroom with school supplies by matching the state allocated $100 per teacher for school supplies for the year.

Through the Treasures for Teachers campaign, donations of $100 are put toward supplying every GMSD teacher with an $120 gift card to the Knowledge Tree to help purchase supplies.
  • Treasures for Teachers has been a widely successful campaign and every teacher within the Germantown Municipal School District is extremely grateful for the community support they receive. GMSD has grown to 417 teachers this year and GEF is halfway to meeting their goal of sponsoring every teacher within the district.
