COMMUNITY EVENTS
DEADLINE COMING SOON!
TALBOT ARTS SUMMER SCHOLARSHIPS TO SUPPORT YOUNG ARTS IN THE COMMUNITY
Talbot Arts welcomes summer arts scholarship applications for county students
now enrolled in grades 9-12. The Arts Council provides scholarships to help students with outstanding artistic promise attend advanced programs in their creative area. These scholarships offer young artists an opportunity to participate in summer arts education programs to broaden each student's experience in their chosen area of study.

The Arts Council accepts applications until March 30, with recipients notified in the first week of May. Students and families who could benefit from these scholarships are encouraged to visit www.talbotarts.org to learn more about the scholarship program and the application process.

There is no specific dollar limit to individual grant requests, but the amount asked
of Talbot Arts must be matched dollar-for-dollar by funds from other sources. For
example, if a program costs $1,000, a student may request no more than $500
from the Arts Council. Eligible art studies include summer arts or music camps and
art, music, and literary programs, classes, or private lessons.

Talbot Arts is very committed to the spirit of these scholarships and understands that the match can be a barrier to deserving students and their ability to participate. The Arts Council works closely with other grant sponsors and organizations whose mission and vision align and help students identify potential sources for the match.
FIRST THE PRESENTATION, THEN THE BILL
Mayor Willey and the Easton Town Council allowed Plastic-Free Easton to make their case against single-use plastic bags at Monday's Town Council Meeting. At the end of their presentation, the volunteers all raised their reusable bags!

Plastic-Free Easton was founded by a group of citizens who want to raise awareness about the problems of using and disposing of “free” single-use plastic bags. The Town of Easton does not recycle plastic bags and the only option to dispose of them is from the store we carry them out of. That's only if that store participates in bag recycling.

Around 90 percent are thrown away and are found in places where they do not belong. The bags pollute the land, water and even kill creatures that get caught in them. Plastic-Free Easton would like to see the Town of Easton require retailers to charge for bags. Paying for bags leads to fewer plastic bags in our landfills, byways, and waterways. Ultimately, community members will get a more beautiful Easton and a healthier environment for the people, fisheries, and agriculture.
MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES PRESENTS BACKYARD BUFFERS PROGRAM
The Backyard Buffers program assists homeowners who have a waterway on or adjacent to their property to create a streamside buffer of native trees and shrubs. A streamside buffer can create habitat for wildlife, reduce peak winter temperatures, and reduce the amount of sediment, fertilizer and toxic materials that enter our waterways. Deep-rooted trees and shrubs can also stabilize streambanks, protecting them from erosion. For more information, click here.
