 The Science of Bears. The world's bear researchers meet every 18 months. Past meetings have been in Greece, the Georgian Republic, etc. This one's in Alaska, starting June 12. This is a big deal. Among other events, there are evening lectures open to the public, one by mauling survivor Dan Bigley, the guy who had the top of his face removed by a bear in Alaska, another by well-known public broadcaster Richard Nelson. But our guests will be biologists. The panel delves into the science of a subject that is always of acute interest
to Alaskans, from Polar Bear tundra to Brown Bear stream to Black Bear rainforest. Bear biology, status and bear/human behavior will be on the agenda.

Research Reveals Alaskan Forests' Carbon Richness. The US Geological Survey (USGS), the US Forest Service and the University of Alaska at Fairbanks have jointly concluded an archetype study that reveals the carbon richness of Alaskan forests. The new research indicates that the forests, wetlands and permafrost of Alaska are home to much bigger carbon deposits as compared to lower 48 states. Interior's Deputy Secretary Mike Connor stated that this targeted evaluation has provided an important information level that will serve as a base for measurements to gain improved insight into the properties of carbon present in Alaskan ecosystems. While 18% area of the US is covered by Alaskan land, about 53% of the total carbon reserve rests in Alaska.

 Kivalina Relocation Relies on Bureaucracies Adapting to Climate Change 'Disaster Events. '
Janet Mitchell says she and many others in Kivalina were encouraged last year when President Obama gave a shout-out to her village, and the peril it faces, after a flyover during his
visit to Alaska.
"... So on my way here, I flew over the island of Kivalina, which is already receding into the ocean," Obama said in a Sept. 2 speech in Kotzebue.

Researchers Study Shipping's Black Carbon. A research project underway to study black carbon is moving closer to the development of a method for measuring emissions from shipping. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Tampere University of Technology and the University of Turku have joined forces in an international project - Shipping Emissions in the Arctic - with the aim of making the measurement of black carbon emissions from shipping more reliable.

 Coast Guard Icebreaker to Set Out This Week for New Project. The Coast Guard icebreaker Healy will set out from Seattle this week to begin a new research mission in the Arctic Ocean. The Healy's crew will be looking at the biology, chemistry, geology and physics of the Arctic Ocean and its ecosystems. They will also do sonar mapping of the Extended Continental Shelf.

The Next Generation Ecosystems Experiments (NGEE-Arctic) is a 10-year Department of Energy (DOE)- supported project whose mission is to improve mathematical models that predict climate through advanced understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological behavior of terrestrial ecosystems in Alaska. 13th International Conference on Gas in Marine Sediments: September 19-22, 2016 (Tromso, Norway).

promotes the study of natural gas and release systems on a global scale and
facilitates interdisciplinary and international cooperation. The conference
intends to bring together geologists, biologists, microbiologist, geophysicists, oceanographers, geochemists and scientists from modeling disciplines. Bridging the Future of Arctic Social Science Research, September 23-24, 2016 (Monticello, Virginia, USA).
The event is sponsored by Arctic Horizons. The event will reassemble the members of the National Steering Committee and a small but diverse selection of representatives from the five regional workshops, to total about 15 people. The aim will be to identify and synthesize the core threads of the previous workshops and public contributions proffered between workshops. The target output for the workshop will be a final report draft and outline of steps leading to the final report release in June 2016. The Jefferson Institute will manage production of the publication.
