Diageo is a global leader in beverage alcohol with an outstanding collection of brands across spirits and beer – a business built on the principles and foundations laid by the giants of the industry.
One of their largest facilities is located in Plainfield, Illinois where they bottle several spirits. The company has a number of sustainability commitment statements, including:

•Increase recycled content to 45%

•Ensure 100% of packaging recyclable

•Reduce absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from direct operations by 50%
-
•Achieve a 30% reduction in absolute greenhouse gas emissions along the total supply chain
These goals make the use of recovered glass in their product very important. Recovered glass from residential and commercial sources is part of the key to achieving these goals. They are members of the Recycling Packaging Coalition and value their membership in the Illinois Recycling Foundation.

Legislative Update
New representatives have taken the oath of office in Springfield and for the first time in nearly 40 years, the Illinois House has elected a new speaker, Rep. Emmanuel “Chris” Welch, with a good environmental track record and the first African-American to hold the position in the State’s history. The deadline for submittal of legislative bills is the first week of February.
- The IRA has retained the services of a lobbying firm with the intention to find a solution to the threat facing our Construction and Demolition Recyclers.
- The ILPSC has told us they are continuing to work on Carpet Recycling legislation and hope to introduce a bill on paint recycling.
- Single-use plastic remains a waste reduction and recycling concern as we hear some local municipalities are now enforcing their bag fee ordinances while some merchants have discontinued their plastic bag collection and recycling programs.

CONCERN HIGHLIGHTED IN Jan 19th
GLASS RECYCLING WEBINAR
According to the Glass Packaging Institute, a national organization that tracks glass recycling, only 8% of glass generated by Illinois residents and businesses is actually recovered and turned into new glass bottles and jars. Much of it appears to become recycling residue that is used as road base or other landfill beneficial use or simply not recovered at all, entering the landfill as waste. While glass is inert and poses no risk, it is heavy and generates more revenue to landfill owners/operators when disposed of instead of being actively recycled. Michigan glass actually travels to Illinois to be recycled because we can't meet the demand for glass due to our poor processing.
The new Glass Committee will be examining this issue in more depth to find solutions and increase our recovery rate. Please send an email to info@illinoisrecycles.org if you would like to be part of this Committee.

COMPOSTABLE MICROWAVEABLE CUP?
The iconic Kraft Mac & Cheese which came in a recyclable box, made with recovered paper, created a microwavable version years ago but in a non-recyclable form without recycled content.
The company is planning to change this version. They are currently testing a new "Recyclable Fiber-Based Microwavable Cup". The innovative cup will eliminate the plastic label through new direct print technology. The intent of the design change from plastic to fiber is to reduce plastic use and to be compostable in industrial composting facilities. Kraft is working with outside partners to certify and incorporate the appropriate recycling labeling to help consumers know exactly what to do with the packaging after they have enjoyed their meal. We will wait to hear the response of composting sites statewide and nationally. The company plans to introduce the cup later this year.

Save Our Seas Bill Signed
Once appropriated, this bill is expected to provide potential recycling end market support, it includes up to $55 million annually available to states through 2025 to support postconsumer materials management programs, and an additional $10 million annually available to local governments and nonprofit organizations to support cleanup and recycling projects.
