Good afternoon,

College football is heating up!  The first NFL game was cancelled last weekend.

I was listening the Braves game last week.  When it went into extra innings, the announcer told the listeners that the "real" extra inning rules would apply.  No runner at second to start the inning.  I've coached youth teams in the past that used this rule.  It got me thinking about other youth baseball league rules, that MLB could adopt.

Once you bat through the lineup, the inning is over.

Mercy rules that end games.  Usually the rules don't apply until after the half way point of the game.  Which should be five innings but what would the rule be if its part of a 7 inning double header.

KARMA.  The agreement between MLB and Minor League Baseball has expired.  MLB is taking significant steps to reorganize Minor League Baseball. All for the benefit of MLB The Appalachian league is going to be a wood bat college league for freshmen and sophomores.  The players will not be paid.  The question is how much will the players have to pay for this opportunity.

I bring this up because there is a case involving the pay of minor league baseball players working its way through the court system. The players claim minimum wage law is being violated. The U.S. Supreme Court announced today that has accepted the players' appeal.
The KARMA part of this story.  When this case was heard at the appeals court, MLB asked Minor League Baseball to "carry the water for MLB" because Minor League Baseball was poorer than MLB and would be more favorably received. The strategy worked. MLB prevailed.  After the appeal's court decision, MLB announced pay increases for the players and then told the Minor League team operators, they would pay for the increased salary.

I doubt that Minor League baseball will carry the water this time for MLB at the Supreme Court.

APBA LEAGUE INFORMATION

I am pleased to report that this column continues to assist leagues in finding new managers and pairing individuals looking for leagues.  I will be glad to run your league opening, if you contact me at [email protected] with a brief and concise write-up.  Openings or individuals looking to join leagues are as follows:

August 23rd Opening

Southern APBA Baseball Association (SABA) Opening - SABA has openings for 3 managers for the upcoming 2000 retro-season.  SABA is a card and dice play by mail league using the basic game with some innovations.  The SABA season runs from October to May.  If interested, please contact Larry Grant at [email protected].

August 9th Opening

CMBL Openings - The CMBLII, a BBW League, has two team managerial openings.  This is a franchise based winter play league.  Continuous ownership where you keep debut players from the franchise you're tied to.  Draft coming soon and would like to fill positions quickly.  If interested please contact Eric Meister at [email protected]. or Bob Jacobus at [email protected].

August 2nd Opening

Jersey Central League Opening (corrected site address) - The Jersey Central League is a cards and dice current season league that has been in existence since 1979.  They are a 14 team league that has been playing face-to-face in the metropolitan Philadelphia and South Jersey area.  Due to COVID-19, they have been playing league games using the Rolz dice roller online, and with 1 opening, they are looking for a manager not necessarily in their physical area.  The league plays the basic game with many master game variations and play the games using an incredible scorebook program.  If interested, please contact Larry Sitron at [email protected], and visit the league web site at www.jselmon.com/JerseyCentralLeague/home.asp

July 18th Opening

Patriot League Opening - A BBW 12-person NL only league needs one new member.  The Patriot League was established in 1971 and is very reliable.  The team you would be inheriting is currently one game out of the division and has a roster for long-term success.  The league is unusual in that they have a first round draft as well as a blind bidding process for undrafted players.  They also have historical statistics since the inception of the league.  If interested in joining the Patriot League please contact Brian Hey at [email protected].

June 28th Opening

CCBA League Openings - The CCBA, a BBW continuous ownership league, is looking for a few good managers.  The league has been in existence since 1998 with several original managers.  There are three teams open at this point.  The teams are at the 70 game mark of the current season.  The three teams available are Puget Sound, Texas, and Quinsigamond.  Please check out the rosters at http://ccbabaseball.freehostia.com.  If interested please contact the League Commissioner Chip Bingham at [email protected].

May 24th Opening

New League Looking for a Manager -  A well-known regional tournament co-director is putting together a new cards & dice league which is looking for a manager.  The league will begin with the 1980R season and work backwards in years.  The league will play 84 games with playoffs (One 3-game series per week).  The unique feature of this league is each player can only be used 52% of actual time played.  Games may be played face-to-face or via skype/zoom/google.  More information including draft instructions will be forwarded once the league is filled.  If interested please contact Ken Schulz at [email protected].

May 17th Opening

Player Looking for a League - An APBA player is interested in getting into a computer baseball league.  If you have an league opening please contact Dan at [email protected].

APBA Hall of Fame Baseball League Draft Day Anniversary

We would like to give a shout out to APBA Hall of Fame League who on September 30th marked their 43rd Annual APBA Hall of Fame League Draft Day.  The APBA baseball card and dice league plays face to face with modified basic game boards according to Gary Growe the league Commissioner.  The league has three original members and one son. Congratulations to the APBA Hall of Fame League and your 43rd year of existence and draft day. We hope all members had a great day and successful draft.

I trust this column is continuing to bring many APBA players together be it through regional tournaments or league play.  I am glad that we can continue to provide this service to the APBA community and further promote brotherhood within our beloved hobby of APBA gaming.  Be safe and stay in place!
