Thanksgiving at Home
at Emmaus House

St. Bede's started a Thanksgiving program at Emmaus House 31 years ago. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, this is the first year we will not been able to fill sacks of food, pick up turkeys, and go to the farmers market to get fresh collards and sweet potatoes.

Good News...Thanksgiving at Home will still happen at Emmaus House this year.

St. Bede's has given $800 to help buy the staples for the dinners and the Atlanta Community Food Bank will be donating 200 turkeys this year.

If you would like to contribute money ($$) for additional food it would be very helpful. Just send a check to St. Bede's and mark it for "Thanksgiving at Home" and we forward that along to Emmaus House.

We will resume the bag collection next year when it is safe to do so.  This is a tradition that will continue on long after COVID is gone!

Do you miss dropping by the office
to hang out or visit with the staff?

Join us for lunch on Zoom!

Make your sandwich,
heat up your soup,
zap those leftovers in the microwave
and the rev up your Zoom machine to
have lunch with the Staff and others on

Tuesday, November 24th
and
Thursday, December 3rd
at Noon

Please let Muriel know if you would like the Zoom link
to join the lunch bunch!

Consider Organ Donation

My husband Richard and I have been attending St Bede's for about two years. Some of you may know that I had a kidney transplant in August, 2019. I had experienced declining health for several years and was finally at the point that I would have to go on dialysis. My doctors suggested a transplant and encouraged me to look for a living donor since the wait for a kidney from a deceased donor is 3-5 years. Richard volunteered to be tested as a donor and, through what I consider a true miracle, he was what the doctors termed "a perfect match" for me! Of course I already knew he was my perfect life match; organ match, too? Unbelievable! His selfless and loving gift saved my life and I am eternally grateful. I never had to start dialysis and we are both recovered and doing very well! I know that living organ donation is not for everyone and is certainly a major decision. But if it is something you might want to consider or if you are just curious and would like first-hand information, feel free to contact Richard for a chat.

I was fortunate to have a living donor but many others are not so lucky. Right now there are over 100,000 men, women and children waiting for a life-saving organ. And thousands more need corneal and tissue transplants. One deceased donation can provide organs to save the lives of 8 people, restore sight to 2 people and heal more than 75 people through tissue donation.

I am here today to ask you to consider signing up to donate your organs at your death to leave behind the priceless gift of life. I know that a lot of you have probably already signed up as a donor on your driver's license. I also recommend that you register with LifeLink. LifeLink is the organization that handles all aspects of organ donation at the time of someone's death. Registering with them will ensure that your desire to donate your organs is known.

If you want more information about donation please go to:

You can register as a donor on the site and find lots of other information including an excellent explanation of how the donation process works. You can also find more information about organ donation and religion here.

My life has been totally changed by Richard's gift and words cannot express how grateful I am. I hope you will consider blessing someone with your organs at the end of your life on earth.

Thank you,
Jennie Couture

Join us in "Keeping the Faith" through our 2020 Time Capsule

St. Bede's has been an integral part of the community since it was founded in 1960, but did you know that people have worshipped on the property we now call home for more than 100 years?  This photograph (that Chad mentioned in his sermon last Sunday) shows people being baptized in the creek that runs alongside the church in the early 20th century.  How have you experienced the spirit of God in the sacred spaces at St. Bede's?  How have you experienced God's presence as we create new sacred spaces during this time of pandemic?

In celebration of St. Bede's 60th year, and to mark this historic time in our nation's history, we invite you to participate in our upcoming "Keeping the Faith" project. During the month of November we will collect written reflections and other creative expressions of our faith to preserve for future generations of this community.

Consider the following questions as you begin to reflect on your experience for our time capsule:

"What would you like to tell future generations of St. Bede's parishioners about your experience of the Covid-19 pandemic?  How have you felt God's presence during this time?"

"Scripture is filled with assurances of God's presence in times of uncertainty.  What passage(s) have been meaningful to you during the Covid-19 pandemic?"

"Future parishioners may also face times of hardship during their journey together.  What words of hope do you have to offer them from 2020?"

If there is interest for an evening group,
please let Muriel know and we will begin a second group.

Vestry Establishes
Community Emergency Assistance Fund

In addition to all of the wonderful ways that the Community Engagement Team is leading us in supporting community ministry partners (locally, churchwide, and globally) during this critical time, the Vestry has established a Community Emergency Assistance Fund to help people within the greater St. Bede's community with food assistance during the current public health crisis.  This fund will be administered confidentially by the clergy in a similar way as their normal discretionary funds, but will be used exclusively to help with food assistance during this crisis.

If you would like to contribute to this fund you may do so through Realm Giving and selecting "Community Emergency Assistance Fund" from the "Fund" drop-down menu. You may also mail a gift to St. Bede's designated for "Community Emergency Assistance Fund".

UPDATE of November 5: We have collected around $5,800 and distributed over $4,200 in assistance though food and utility support for individuals and families so far during the current public health crisis. The current balance of the fund stands at around $1,500 and new needs continue to present themselves.  A dedicated group of members work with Fabio to help identify need and deliver food.  Thank you to all who have contributed!

If you have questions about this offering to the greater St. Bede's community or if you are in need of food assistance or know someone who is, please contact either the Rev'd Caroline Magee or the Rev'd Fabio Sotelo.

10 Tips for Going Green at Home

I feel grateful to work for an organization that cares about the environment and recognizes climate as a key priority.

Did you know that Episcopal Relief & Development offsets around 350 tons of CO2 emissions each year by planting trees in the Philippines through the Episcopal-CARE Foundation? We also help communities prepare for and recover from climate-related disasters in a way that safeguards land and other natural resources to protect the environment.

In recent months, many of my colleagues have personally taken steps to live an environmentally-conscious lifestyle.

Check out these ten simple tips from our staff for going green at home. I hope that these tips inspire you to take small steps to go green in your own home as well!
