BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Battle of the Books (BoB) is a voluntary, reading incentive program for students in 3rd to 5th grades. Students will meet once a month, October through March, to discuss the different books on the reading list and prepare for the trivia battle. In March, randomized teams will be formed and students will compete in a 3-part trivia battle to test their book & author knowledge.

Any student is welcome to participate in the meetings, but in order to participate in the school battles, students must read a minimum of 8 books (3rd grade) and 15 books (4/5th grade) from the attached list for their grade. All students receive prizes and special recognition is given to those who have read all the books on the list.
The first meeting will be held over zoom on Friday, October 15th, at 3pm.

If your child is interested in participating in this program, please fill out the google form below by October 12th!

NEWS FROM THE DEI COMMITTEE

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) cannot be the stand-alone work of one committee or even a small group of individuals. It is the work of every PTA member who decides to service the families and children in their community. Redondo Beach PTA (RBPTA) embraces the diverse backgrounds, experiences, knowledge and talents of the students, families and school communities we serve. We strive to empower ALL voices because our differences are our greatest strength in our mission to make every child’s potential a reality.

Weekly, we will post in this section information about the different celebrations that are observed in each particular month. These celebrations help us raise awareness and also reach a deeper understanding of diversity and all its beautiful facets.
September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month. During this time we recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success. https://www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov/
In October we are also celebrating the Bilingual Child Month. A person who is bilingual knows two or more languages and understand multiple cultures.
Dyslexia Awareness Month seeks to raise awareness and share the tools to increase better reading skills. Around the world, those who have been diagnosed with the condition will find new resources and approaches to reading.
Another important celebration for us this month is the Down Syndrome Awareness Month. During this month, events take place not only to raise awareness but to shine a light on the abilities and dreams of those with Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome Awareness Month seeks to break down barriers and focus on promoting advocacy for people with Down syndrome.
Last but not least, October is LGBT History Month when we recognize the achievements of the LGBT community. LGBT History Month encourages informative discussions to learn more about the leaders in the movement who drive equality forward.
