I have the pleasure of driving over the Sebastian Inlet Bridge every day on my way to work. Most mornings there’s an osprey perched on the top looking for her morning meal and for a moment it feels as if I am perched up there with her. The views are phenomenal, and everyone almost always slows down as they drive over to get a good glimpse. It’s December, and the white pelicans have arrived from the north and are covering the jetty rocks like large clumps of snow.

As I continue my way south, I look to the west, across the Indian River Lagoon, and see the charming town of Sebastian which looks just as charming from the water as it does from land. Next, I get yet another outstanding view as I drive over the Wabasso Causeway and passed the Environmental Learning Center. This is where I learn most of my Florida nature knowledge and is a favorite among visitors. Arriving at work, I breathe in the sea air as I look back now across the Lagoon to the east. My destination? The Pelican Porch Visitor’s Center which is located directly along this incredibly scenic drive.

The drive is part of the Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway that takes you off the beaten path, meanders through unique Florida towns, and surprises you with hidden gems. The SRA is full of them; historical landmarks like Marsh Landing Restaurant in Fellsmere, Native and early American culture at McLarty’s Museum, treasure hunting at Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum & Gift Shop, wildlife encounters, and more eco-adventures than you can count.

The first Friday in December kicks off the holidays with one of Sebastian’s signature events, Light Up Night, where businesses decorate brightly and open their doors late giving away gifts and goodies galore. This is the perfect time to get all your holiday shopping done and finally go to that place you've been wanting to check out. The next day, drink and be merry celebrating that your done shopping, at the Sebastian BrewFest! The City of Sebastian's Annual Christmas Parade continues the festivities the following weekend with everyone from the community coming together in holiday spirit.
