CCSD93’s Dual Language program teaches students in both English and Spanish with the goal of its students becoming bilingual, bilterate and culturally competent. Its original cohort began as a class of kindergartners at Roy DeShane in 2015-16. The program has continuously grown and expanded since then, adding cohorts at Cloverdale and Elsie Johnson.
With the original cohort entering 6th grade next school year, CCSD93’s Dual Language Committee has met throughout this school year to determine the program’s location and structure at the middle school level. All of CCSD93’s Dual Language parents were invited to serve in an advisory role by providing guidance and feedback to the Committee.
Throughout their work, the Committee determined that ideally the program would be held at a single middle school location in order to be most effective and that the students would learn humanities in Spanish, language arts in both English and Spanish, and all other content areas in English. At the January 14 Board of Education meeting, representatives from the Dual Language Committee shared these determinations and made the recommendation that the program be held at Stratford Middle School as each current Dual Language elementary school feeds into Stratford. The Board accepted this recommendation, and now preparations are underway to welcome the program to Stratford starting in 2021-22.
I thank the members of the Dual Language Committee, which includes teachers and administrators from every CCSD93 school as well as parents from each of CCSD93’s current Dual Language schools, for all of their work.
