Lessons from Malaria towards COVID-19

The GOHi regional office participated in the Controlled Human Infection Challenge Studies: Lessons from Malaria towards COVID-19, a highly relevant forum with 140 attendees and high level presentations. The webinar outlined the risk mitigation steps taken in previous malaria human challenge studies and explored how those steps can be applied in the context of developing a COVID-19 vaccine; and addressed ethical and practical concerns. Regional Director, Getnet Yimer, MD, spoke on "Leveraging Human Infection Studies in Endemic Populations."

Fellow spotlight: Bekele Wegi

Bekele Wegi is an Agricultural Economist. He is currently a PhD candidate in agricultural economics at Haramaya University. He is involved in the TARTARE project, focusing specifically on the economics-side of the project. TARTARE is funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the United Kingdom Government’s Department for International Development and aims to develop and implement a risk-based framework for food safety management and resource allocation with the goal of reducing foodborne illnesses and deaths and increasing equitable consumption of a safe, affordable and nutritious diet.
