Dear MS Families,

Staying connected through digital forms of communication has become a huge part of students’ lives. Whether it’s checking in with teachers, getting messages about sports or carpool from home, or collaborating with peers, access to Schoology messages, Google tools and email does a lot to support students and families at LNC.

With that access comes responsibility on everyone’s part to ensure that digital communications during school hours and on school devices comply with our Student Technology Policy, as written on page 41 in our Student Handbook. During the third quarter, we have had multiple instances where students have been reported for irresponsible or inappropriate use of digital communication, especially when it comes to email and Google applications. These communications include cheating by emailing or receiving answers among individuals or groups of students, excessive and unauthorized emailing to friends and family during class time, and engaging in communications that disrupt learning through spreading gossip, causing drama or being unkind to others.

As we enter the 4th quarter, we will be explicitly reminding students about the Student Technology Policy and the consequences for violating the policy. While we educate our students to be good digital citizens, we will also remind them that repeated misuse of technology may result in certain privileges being revoked on a case-by-case basis, including access to student email for those who fail to comply with our policy.

We strongly encourage all families to have conversations about what constitutes appropriate use of digital communication and use of technology. While we can help guide students in the right direction while they are in school, they need to hear a consistent message at home as well, and we very much need and appreciate your support with this message. As we round out this school year, we aim to finish strong by empowering students to use the tools and resources at hand to be successful and engaged learners. If you have questions about how you can more closely monitor your child’s digital communications, please reach out to a member of our technology team (kribbans@lncharter.org or mrogowski@lncharter.org) for assistance. Thank you for your continued support and for choosing LNC to be a part of your child’s education.
