Lakeway Weekend Activities
School is just around the corner, so it's one of the few remaining weekends to dive into summer activities before classes begin. It's also a tax free weekend (CLICK HERE for those details), so a good time to stock up on school supplies. On your break from shopping, be sure to check out the many "Shark Week" activities offered by the City of Lakeway Parks & Recreation team, and be sure to bring out your dancing shoes on Monday evening. While face coverings are not required per State Order, they are still encouraged along with social distancing measures when engaging with others not from your household. Please see the next story for a COVID-19 health and safety update.

Here are some details about the events happening through this coming weekend:

SCAVENGER HUNT
Shark Week takes ahold of Lakeway starting today with a special 'Shark in the Park' Scavenger Hunt at Lakeway City Park. Special shark fins are hidden across the green space. If you're able to find them, you could win a special prize. The hunt runs through Thursday, August 12.

RHYTHM & REELS
Also this evening, a special showing of "The Meg" will take place to end the final installment of Rhythm and Reels. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Lakeway Swim Center (3103 Lakeway Blvd.) with free hot dogs and yard games, along with a live music performance by Vision Arcade. The special movie screening will take place at 8:45 p.m.

SHARK POOL PARTY
Tomorrow (Saturday, August 7), come back to the Swim Center for a special 'Shark Pool Party.' The event starts at 4 p.m. with shark-themed games, photo ops, prizes and a chance to ride a 'tame' shark. CLICK HERE for details on all the Shark Week activities happening through this weekend.

COVID-19 Update: Travis County in Stage 5
Travis County moved to Stage 5 of the Austin Public Health risk-based guidelines yesterday due to a continued increase in COVID-19 related hospitalizations. The guidelines recommend all individuals, whether vaccinated or not vaccinated, wear a proper face covering when engaging with others not from your household. The guidelines also recommend those not vaccinated avoid gatherings and activities unless essential. Austin Public Health urges the community to get vaccinated. The majority of those hospitalized are not vaccinated, and in a press conference yesterday afternoon, health officials also mentioned patients in the hospital are now younger and staying in the hospital longer due to COVID-19 related issues. CLICK HERE for more details on the Stage 5 guidelines.

Travis County continues to offer multiple COVID-19 vaccine distribution pop-up events throughout the weekend. No appointments are necessary. CLICK HERE for those details and locations.

COVID-19 Cases and hospitalizations continue to climb in the region. A total of 91,894 positive cases have been reported to date in Travis County. There have been a total of 2,965 cases in the Lakeway area (zip codes 78734, 78738 and 78669) since the start of the pandemic (up 76 cases from the same time last week, compared to a rise of 71 the previous week). There are currently 3,412 active cases at this time in Travis County (up from 2,365 last week) and a seven-day moving average of 412 hospitalizations in the region (up from 272 last week). NEW: Citizen Workshop

Registration is now open for a special Citizen Preparedness Workshop event hosted by the City of Lakeway's Emergency Management Coordinator. This event will take place the morning of Saturday, August 28 at the Lakeway Police Department and feature presentations on how to prepare for an emergency, and guidance on how to prepare your own family emergency readiness plan. Disasters can strike with little to no warning, so having a plan in place to keep your family safe is important. September is National Preparedness Month, so now is a good time to sign up for this event. CLICK HERE for more details, and to register for this free workshop.
NEW: National Night Out

National Night Out (NNO) in Lakeway will take place the evening of Tuesday, October 5, 2021. This is an annual event designed to strengthen our community by encouraging citizen engagement with their neighbors and police. Dozens of neighborhood events typically take place throughout the evening with our police officers visiting individual locations and giving important advice on public safety. Last year's event was held virtually through Facebook Live due to the ongoing pandemic. If you're interested in participating as a host this year, please email the event coordinator, Pearl Jones at [email protected]. CLICK HERE for more information.
