WHAT'S NEW DOWNTOWN
Ever wonder how the seasonal decorations, art projects, and events in the downtown area are coordinated and funded? Much of it happens thanks to the required fees and volunteer efforts of the Downtown Business Improvement District (BID).

The annual BID assessment and yearly budget must be reviewed and approved by City Council each year in a two-step process that includes a public hearing.

The 2023 BID assessment items are on the Council agendas for December 5, 2022 (Item #6) and December 19, 2022 (public hearing)

Street Light Flickering Mystery Solved
Recently, several business owners reported flickering of several historic streetlights that have been retrofitted to LEDs. The City determined that water droplets on the lenses were causing this, and new lenses are being installed to remedy the issue. If you notice a streetlamp flickering or any other non-emergency streets issue, contact the City’s Public Works Department at publicworks@cityofpetaluma.org. Include a description of the issue (&/or photo), its location, and (if possible) the street light number listed along the side of the pole.
Estimated to open mid-December in the former location of Dempsey’s, Luma Bar & Eatery will showcase local farms and highlight vegetables and sustainable meats. And the owner hopes to create an ambiance similar to that of its predecessor.

The City of Petaluma partnered with Petaluma People Services Center to bring our community the SAFE (Specialized Assistance for Everyone) Program in July of 2021. The goal of the SAFE team is to address crisis response, prevention, and intervention for our most vulnerable community members experiencing mental health issues, substance abuse issues, and homelessness. This mobile crisis response team approach provides more efficient and successful outcomes for crisis response, intervention, and treatment for the long-term improvement of our community and individual quality of life.

The SAFE Team comprises civilian first responders who will respond to and proactively address calls for service that have traditionally (and unnecessarily) burdened law enforcement, emergency medical services, and health care providers.

If you need the SAFE Team’s services, you can reach them in the following ways:

  • Call 911 – An emergency dispatcher will answer and determine if your situation requires the SAFE team, first responders such as police, fire, paramedics, or a combination of both.

  • Call 707-781-1234 – You will reach a directory where you can speak with a 911 operator or a non-emergency staff member to help.

A message from the County of Sonoma:

Be sure to register yourself and anyone else in your family (kids, elderly parents, etc) who would benefit from emergency notifications.
