Spring 2021: What will service look like?
While our traditional service drives won’t be running this semester, our community engagement work will be continuing virtually. It is important now more than ever to think about how we can nurture a spirit of community, shared responsibility, hope, and connection so that we can truly be men and women with and for others - everyday.

There is much you can do to make a difference in the lives of others. Our community partners need you now more than ever - even virtually!

We have a host of virtual service opportunities available for you, including:
  • service-learning courses,
  • voluntary weekly service opportunities,
  • advocacy opportunities,
  • community-building projects,
  • weekly community engagement challenges.

Many of our service opportunities will be held through Zoom and other online platforms where you will be working directly with members of the community.

Be sure to also read our E-newsletter each week for all the latest news and opportunities from CSSA. Our weekly challenges and one-time opportunities are a good introduction to service for those who have never tried it before. These service activities are open to JCU students, staff, faculty, and administration.

Explore our online registration system, GivePulse, to explore and learn about opportunities that will keep you engaged and connected to the community this semester!

Our #MyMagisMessage for the week comes from CSSA Student Liaison, Lilian Lebednick, a senior Supply Chain Management major and Psychology minor from Farmington Hills, MI! Lilian has served with Fatima Family Center for Afterschool Tutoring, St. Martin de Porres High School for Philosophy Tutoring, Eliza Bryant for Saturday Games Day and Spa Night, and YouthAbility for Exercise Class.

If you had to state your life mission off the top of your head, in one sentence, what would it be?
"To create the best version of tomorrow by being kind to myself and others today."

#MyMagisMessage
Service puts the Magis teaching into practice. Many find that painting a woman's nails or teaching a child how to subtract to be simple, basic, and not life-changing. But when you leave a service site, you've not only changed that person's life, but you've changed yours as well. The Magis is doing more for others so you can grow into yourself.

I've partaken in service every semester since freshman year and it has had the greatest impact on my John Carroll experience. Service has given me the opportunity to work with diverse groups of people, bond with other students, and take responsibility as a leader. I have learned something from every person I've met. Sometimes it's little lessons like be prepared, pay attention, and stay motivated. However, the biggest lessons hit harder - to take responsibility for your mistakes and become a better person through them.

If I made a mistake yesterday, yesterday's me is still me. I am who I am today with all my faults. The goal for tomorrow is to be a tiny bit wiser, and that's me too. I have many faults and I have many fears, but I am going to embrace every day as a challenge to use them for the better.
