2020 Graduate Perspective
What’s it like to graduate during a global pandemic?

I remember when this all started like it was yesterday. I had just dropped my son off at preschool and was on my way to class. We were going to continue discussing the plans for our senior showcase that was set to be in 2 weeks. We’ve been working on our projects and thinking about our showcase for 7 months. March 12, 2020 was the day they announced that we were going to start virtual instruction. I know I wasn’t the only one who was disappointed. All we could think of was everything we were going to miss out on. When you’re a freshman, sophomore, and junior, you can’t wait to do all the senior events, especially graduation. We all have our stories that give us our motivation to complete our degrees, and it makes walking across that stage all the more special. But everything was about to change.

Finding the motivation to continue working on projects and assignments was hard. Half of the experience of college was actually being on campus. Having your community (classmates, study groups, clubs, etc.) on campus to help keep yourself accountable for your studies was now gone, or at least it wasn’t the same. Our professors were given a week to prepare for the online transition. I can only imagine how tough it was for them to adjust their assignments and teaching methods. Students weren’t the only ones going through a difficult time. Just as there are some students who work better in a classroom, there are teachers who prefer to do their teaching in person.

We made it to graduation, but now we’re all in this stage of limbo and we’re not sure what to do about our futures. We were given the resources to find a job, but not the resources to find a job during a global pandemic. If businesses that were not essential couldn’t be open, how were we supposed to find jobs? I felt like I went to school for nothing. As businesses begin to reopen we don’t know how much will change in the industries that we are looking to find jobs in. What are the new protocols going to be? Will the employers put my health concerns first? Is all this worth it? What is my plan B?

The upside was I got to spend more time with my son. I had the chance to appreciate and be grateful for the things that I have. I’m sure we all got that chance. Our lives aren’t just about working and earning a living. It’s also about living.

Stay Safe. Stay Healthy.

A Designer's Perspective - Stay Inspired!

Andrea Miranda-Hall. Allied ASID
Professional Development Director
ASID California Central / Nevada Chapter
At the end of 2019, I decided to start reading a book that I found on my husband’s night stand, The 12 Week Year. I had been frustrated by the feeling that I was “stuck” in my Interior Design career for a couple of years and was determined to make change!

I had become exhausted by the repetition and psychology of Residential Interior Design. I had been disappointed by the lack of support and reciprocation that I received from business colleagues and partners time and time again. Interior Design has been a second career for me and connecting with my creativity as well as seeing concepts such as the Hospitality Suite and Kitchen and Bath Showcase at LVDC become a reality was somewhat rewarding. However, feelings of disappointment and negativity still hung over me like a cloud.

I had reinvented myself before after the economic downturn in 2008. I was forced to leave the real estate and mortgage business that had become virtually nonexistent after the birth of my second daughter. Even though times were uncertain, I was invigorated by the prospect of change. Well those feelings are back, and I chose to start the metamorphosis again. I put my feelers out for new opportunity within the interior design business.

With this said, be careful what you ask of the universe!

The last three months have been unlike any other time in history for all of us. We have been faced with the repercussions of racial injustice and the intolerance of this injustice. An atmosphere of fierce political divide has polarized family members and ended friendships. Compounded by the somewhat sudden backlash of science and nature of this unprecedented Corona virus outbreak.

For this family of four and a half, as we recently became guardians of our toddler great niece, we have enjoyed being together but have also come to face that we are all in the need of change! We have come to see and want to protect what is truly important and that is each other, our home, as well as a positive outlook and hope for the future. Our cocoon has brought us closer as a family, some closure, some uncertainty - but also some inspiration!

We are choosing to shed the negativity of the past by renovations of ourselves as well as our homes. Stay inspired and new opportunity will take flight!
