161 Young Adults Helped and Counting!
Greetings!

Many things have changed in our world since the COVID-19 crisis came to New York in March, but Hearts to Homes' mission remains constant - helping young adults who have aged out of foster care to furnish their first, independent apartments.

When there were few things that could be counted on in chaotic times, foster youth who were referred to us for assistance received ALL of the help that they asked for - and some additional help that was unexpected! We are pleased to share some news with you about the impact that your donations have made for foster youth in New York City and Westchester County.
64 New Homes Furnished So Far This Year
22 Apartments Completed Since May!

With the leadership of an anonymous donor, our May Matching Challenge Campaign was launched with a goal of raising $20,000 during National Foster Care Awareness Month. Despite our concern about the impact that the economic uncertainty might have on this critical fundraiser, our donors responded to the challenge, raising $24,100!

Referrals for assistance slowed during the height of the pandemic, but increased quickly following New York City's Phase 2 reopening. Twenty-two young adults submitted Wish Lists and received their desired "essential" household furnishings from May through July! This bring the total of all youth assisted during our current fiscal year to 64!

As might be expected, we are seeing our program costs increase and logistics becoming more complicated. The average price of furnishing an apartment has risen almost $100 since February. It currently costs $2,097 for all the necessary furnishings and furniture (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room) for an average apartment. We know that when we are collectively in a crisis, our supporters and volunteers continue to be there for the youth we serve!!

We could not be more grateful for your support, but we’re not done yet! Hearts to Homes has many more young adults to set up for success, and the May Challenge funds have now been fully utilized!

Aging out of foster care can be a scary process at any point in time, but during these challenging times anxiety levels can be especially high. When stay-at-home orders happen, few things are more important than one’s home. Our young adults are able to stay safe and be more comfortable, because you have helped them to create their perfect first home. Thank you for your generosity!

Our Special COVID-19 Campaign Impacts Urgent Needs!
Important Hearts to Homes Housing Statistics

  • 77% of Hearts to Homes alumni live in NYCHA buildings throughout New York City.

  • Thirty of our alumni live within the ten New York City COVID-19 "hot spot" zip codes.

  • Layoffs were likely to impact our youth at higher rates than the general population. 60% of our youth have a high school diploma or GED as their highest level of education.

Recognizing the impact that the virus and its economic fallout would have on the youth we have previously assisted, Hearts to Homes developed a program to address anticipated needs. Your support of our May Challenge helped ease financial burdens for our young adults. Their needs were critical, and what they told us reinforced our desire to help.

We look forward to a productive and joyful relationship with Little Flower.

Hearts to Homes now partners with eleven different foster care agencies. We also continue to assist youth from Cardinal McCloskey Community Services, The New York Foundling, Rising Ground, Catholic Guardian Services, Abbott House, JCCA, MercyFirst, The Children's Village, Forestdale and Graham Windham.

What Could Be Easier Than Making A Monthly Gift?
Make a difference for the price of a cup of coffee!
If you are wondering how you might impact someone's life quickly and easily, we have just the answer - Monthly Giving!  An amount that may be a small sacrifice for you - $5, $10, $20 or $50 a month - would make a huge difference in the life of a young adult aging out of foster care.  Think of it as the price of a morning coffee or one less take-out meal.  Over the course of a year, you could help purchase a microwave, a complete kitchen or even an entire living room!

We have recently seen an increase in donors who like the idea of giving monthly. Take advantage of this budget-friendly, transformational giving opportunity today.
