The New Now: Life after COVID-19
  
Dan Gunn (Sept 9 Compass) Many of the disruptions introduced by the pandemic will have a lasting impact on the economy, how we work and the way we design our communities. To explore the road ahead, UBCM has invited a panel of experts to a 2020 Convention workshop to share their thoughts on the challenges and opportunities that will confront decision-makers. In the words of Dan Gunn, CEO of VIATeC, "socio-economic recovery should not simply mean returning to things as they were before. Communities, regions and economies that are opportunistic and adaptive will be best positioned to take advantage of the changes brought by these unique times."   Read more 
Convention workshop will examine seniors' care
  
Isobel MAckenzie Sept 9 Compass A 2020 UBCM Convention workshop will explore the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed significant gaps in long term care.  The session, to be held Thursday September 24, will explore the structure and funding of seniors' homes, and discuss what changes are needed to improve long-term care in our province.  The panel will include Senior Advocate Isobel MacKenzie, academics from York University and the University of British Columbia, and Dr. Terry Lake from BC Care Providers.  
Housing needs report guidelines & intake
  
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has developed guidelines for local governments in the process of creating a Housing Needs Report for their community. These guidelines are intended to provide additional clarity on several aspects of the requirements and recommendations for the reports. Read more 
Orange Shirt Day
  
Orange Shirt Day is approaching: September 30 has become an annual day of recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and wellbeing, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. Members interested in honouring the survivors and remembering those that did not survive may learn more via the Orange Shirt Society.
