Surety, bonding experts tackle tough questions in final episode of podcast series
For its final episode in a three-part Surety and Bonding series the Construction Record podcast team held a rapid-fire question session with Smartbuild Construction Solutions founder Zulqernain Malik, FCA Insurance Brokers vice-president of surety Andrew Cartwright and Jeff Scorgie, an associate with the Construction Practice Group at WeirFoulds.
On the value and responsiveness of surety bonds, Cartwright noted research that analyzed tens of thousands of construction projects found that non-bonded contractors were 10 times more likely to go insolvent than bonded contractors.

EllisDon implements intelligent infrastructure for Dubai tower
EllisDon’s Energy & Digital Services (E&DS) team was selected to deliver its managed services solution for ICD-Brookfield Place in Dubai, which included supporting the intelligent infrastructure that was deployed during the construction of the building.
This was the first project of its kind for EllisDon in the Middle East. The building is a $1.7 million, 55-storey, one-million-square-foot mixed-use highrise located in the Dubai International Financial Centre in the United Arab Emirates.

Ontario Preparing Students for Skilled Trades and Technology Careers
The Ontario government is investing almost $440,000 to help more than 2,000 high school students learn more about available skilled trades and technology careers. The project, led by not-for-profit Junior Achievement (JA), will help local communities recover more quickly from COVID-19 by addressing a shortage of workers in jobs like electrician, plumber, carpenter, computer analyst and software developer.
Details were provided today by Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development, and Jane McKenna, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development.

Pomerleau team wins $82.3M contract for Brampton Courthouse, Toronto bail centre projects
A construction team headed by Pomerleau Inc. has been awarded the contract for two Toronto area renovation and fit-out projects tied to the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General.
Infrastructure Ontario (IO) said June 1 it has finalized a deal with the Trans/FORM consortium to design, build and finance the Brampton Courthouse Addition Phase 2 and the Toronto Region Bail Centre projects. The Crown agency had narrowed the field of bidders to two last summer, issuing a request for proposals in August.

WSIB accepting entries for health and safety awards for small businesses
Ontario’s Workplace Safety & Insurance Board is accepting entries for its latest Small Business Health and Safety Leadership Awards.
The program recognizes Ontario businesses with fewer than 50 employees that have taken steps to keep their team, customers and communities safe “whether it’s small steps or big changes.”
Entries opened June 1, and the government agency will be accepting applicants until July 9. Businesses can enter by sharing their success stories from the past year.

Procore Technologies, Inc. has published the results of a new survey that found a correlation with having visibility of performance and time and money savings.
The study, What Gets Measured Gets Managed, explores the impact of construction companies having real-time insights into their project management processes, or visibility of performance, through cloud-based software compared to traditional manual processes that can be more difficult to assess.
