MESA COUNTY LIBRARIES
AUGUST 2021
Drive-up book return at Central Library
to close for construction
The drive-up book return at the Central Library in downtown Grand Junction will be temporarily closed beginning approximately Wednesday, Aug. 11.

The library will be installing a drive-through window in order to make Curbside Pick-Up more convenient for patrons and more efficient for library staff to serve. Construction will disrupt the drive-through lane, so the book return will be closed during the project.

The drive-up book return is expected to be closed for about two weeks during construction.

Here is what this news means for patrons (besides an awesome new drive-through window):

• During the book return closure, patrons may return items inside the library, or they can wait a couple of weeks until the drive-up return reopens.

• Mesa County Libraries do not charge fines for overdue items, so patrons who keep their items from Mesa County Libraries will not incur late charges by holding on to them.

• Patrons returning materials after hours also may use the outdoor book returns at other library locations if they desire.

Curbside Pick-Up service will continue through the construction project in the designated parking spots at the library.

The library appreciates patrons’ patience while we install the drive-up window.

A Bison Tale: Prehistoric Bison Hunting
in Western Colorado
The complex relationship between bison and humans in western Colorado is a fascinating story, and you can learn more about it at noon Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Central Library.

Recent excavations and research by Grand River Institute and Dominguez Archaeological Research Group have resulted in the recovery of more than 500 specimens including culturally modified bison bones, bone tools, and associated projectile points and other items. Dates from these artifacts span a period from 11,700 years ago to the late 1800s.

In "A Bison Tale: Prehistoric Bison Hunting in Western Colorado," archaeologist Holly Shelton will include discussion of known and recent discoveries and will explore how the collected data has expanded our knowledge base of human/bison interaction in western Colorado.

This event is intended for all ages and takes place at noon Thursday, Aug. 19, in the Central Library Community Room. Seating is limited, and registration is required. Visit the Event Calendar at mesacountylibraries.org to register.

Learn about sustainability
in "Off-Grid Living with Rick and Di Herald"
Rick and Di Herald built an off-grid home on a remote canyon edge in western Colorado. The house, made out of tires, cans, and bottles, is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They have ample electricity from the sun to run all the electronics needed for a 21st century life.

Join us for a presentation about the Heralds' home. They will show images of the home, the construction process, and adventures in building it.

This event takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Collbran Fire Station, 2004 Elm Ave. Enter through the doors from Mother's Park, 2003 High St. This event is free and for all ages.
