SEASONS OF LOVE

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”    Luke 6:38

As I write this devotional, I am pondering Pastor Ruth’s New Year’s Day sermon, “Make ‘em Count.” She began by telling us the number of days she has lived to date. That set me to thinking about a song (of course!) from the Broadway musical, RENT.

Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes

Five hundred twenty-five thousand moments so dear

Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes

How do you measure, measure a year?

In daylights, in sunsets

In midnights, in cups of coffee

In inches, in miles

In laughter, in strife

In five hundred twenty-five thousand

Six hundred minutes

How do you measure

A year in the life?

How do I measure a year?

In Sundays, in rehearsals, in phone calls with family?

In bills paid, in meetings, in breakfasts with friends?

(And yes, the meter fits in the song.)

It causes me to think about how I’d really like to measure this year. The song from RENT is called Seasons of Love. Should I measure the year in words of encouragement? In volunteering for some opportunity at church? In spending God’s gift of my talent for the benefit of those who need it? In just spending time listening to someone who needs my ear? I can probably do all of that and more.

Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes

Five hundred twenty-five thousand moments to share.

In five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes

How do you measure a year in your life?

God of all time, give me the wisdom to know how to spend your gift of this year so that I can make it a season of love for you and for all your children. In the name of Emmanuel, I pray. Amen.
