Outdoor Education trips return for juniors, seniors
|
|
After a one-year hiatus because of the pandemic, Outdoor Education trips resumed this year, with juniors and seniors traveling first. Students returned from their trips last weekend.
Juniors traveled to the Washington, D.C. area with visits to Harpers Ferry and Gettysburg, hikes in the Shenandoah National Park and excursions into D.C. to explore monuments and museums.
Seniors went to southern Florida, for marine biology instruction, wetlands research, hiking, canoeing and swimming with manatees. The trip also included a surprise visit from Mrs. Elizondo, the former Upper School English teacher, who had previously served as Head of Upper School.

Middle schoolers win Girl Scout Silver Award
|
Congratulations to seventh-grader Madeline (left) and sixth-grader Nirmal on winning the Girl Scout Silver Award.
The Silver Award is the highest honor a Cadette can achieve. The two girls
created computer games to teach young kids about safety issues they may encounter in their lives. They spent more than 50 hours each learning a programming language, creating their computer games and promoting their games to the San Antonio community and beyond.

“I hid in the clouded warmth of the crowd
But when they said, “Sit down,” I stood up
Ooh, ooh, growin’ up
–Bruce Springsteen
Watching Keystone seniors frolic in the Gulf of Mexico brought joy to the hearts of us chaperones. After a 7.5-mile hike, the students were ready to leap into warm Gulf water, play football in the surf, and jump off one another’s shoulders. They laughed, squealed with delight, and acted like the fun-loving adolescents they are.
Perhaps this is what made the moment so magical. As the students played, one of the group leaders and I floated in the water, watched to make sure they were safe, and shared how happy we were for them.. For more than a year and a half now, the lives of children all over the world, including Keystone Cobras, have been altered by COVID. They slogged through distance learning and hybrid schedules, and missed many of the typical adolescent rites of passage: games were canceled and dances were scrapped. At a time of life when there’s so much to enjoy, many teens experienced disappointment and sadness instead. Even last week’s Outdoor Education trip could occur only after everyone provided proof of vaccination and a negative COVID test.

From National Honor Society sponsor Mr. Lindsay:
Keystone’s National Honor Society is walking and fundraising to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night event!
